I, along with a few other people, walked out of a Thursday evening service when a priest, shortly before the 2004 elections, proceeded to talk politics. The priest has been vocal about his displeasure for the Bishop and isn’t afraid to make his opinion known. This wasn’t my home parish, I was going to get a feel of the Mass at that particular Parish.

I’m sorry, but politics, in my opinion, should NOT be discussed in a church. One hears too much about politics from the secular media - I personally feel that church is a perfect place to try to get away from the troubles our world is facing and gives me a chance to pray about them.
If the priest was speaking about how to aply Catholic teaching to the voting booth, I would have no problem. If he was pushing his personal opinion I would.

It’s real easy to Monday morning quarterback your folks, and say they should have stayed put for the whole Mass. As long as they heard Mass elsewhere, there’s no problem that I can see. Sounds like they may need to be looking for another parish. I guess I’m fortunate in that I’ve been blessed with some really great priests in a really wonderful parish. I’ve noted several posts where a report to the Bishop was suggested. Such a report is a proper Canonical response. Corrective action, if any, may not come at lightning speed. Few things in the Church do, but I honestly suspect if the Chancery gets too many complaints of the same nature, on a particular priest, some corrective action will be taken.

On the contrary this is the perfect place to talk on politics. A priest that does not try to form his flock on how the teachings of the Church must inform his vote is not doing his job. I think that it is important to not get into partisan politics most of the time. However, here are times when a pastor of souls needs to take a stand against a particular candidate one way or the other.
