This is Jason’s wife, and God has blessed us with two babies in the last two years. My employment provides us with medical coverage currently. We need to find an affordable alternative medical plan. In addition, I would need provide a small supplemental income.

My husband is currently look for a job to resolve both of these issues, however, the sooner I can get home the better.

Does anyone have any suggestions on either of these two items? (medical, and small supplemental income)

We have already cut our budget to the best of our ability, so any suggestion on saving money on groceries, utilities, living expenses, etc would be of great help too!

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

well speaking personally, and i’m sure it varys state to state alot of places have free he alth clinics. My kiddos are covered by the state because my hubby doesn’t make a whole lot. I know some people don’t approve of that, but our daughter was born in with a heart condition so its been a blessing. I would look into what your state or town has to offer.

I’m a SAHM who tries to help my DH as best I can money-wise. I use this website: hip2save.com to help save money on groceries and have significantly cut my grocery bill in the months I’ve been using it. I hope you get a chance to check it out–I’ve probably cut costs like disposable diapers by about 75%, for instance, since I only buy them when they are on sale. I hope it helps you realize your dream of being a SAHM soon–I’m so glad we chose for me to stay home! 🙂

My wife has been a SAHM for about a year now, and our budget has never looked better. She follows coupon blogs, and has gotten our monthly grocery budget down to about $200 for our family of 5. If you’re willing to spend a little time researching and planning, you can stockpile when you find good deals, plan meals around what you can get for almost free, etc. We’re also going to basically end up only giving Christmas gifts that she got for free. In our case, the time she spends doing that more than makes up for what we would have made if she had spent that time at a job. You might consider doing that instead of bringing a supplemental income.

With regards to groceries, there are many blogs out there that match coupons with sales at grocery stores. Walmart matches prices of advertised sales. Going back to basics can also help (cooking with staple ingredients instead of buying premade stuff).

If you are all healthy with no pre-existing medical conditions, look into getting a high deductible plan. Several years ago when we were running our own business, I found a plan with a $2500 deductible that saved several hundred dollars a month. Basically, we paid for all of our visits out of pocket, but at the much lower rate that the insurance company (Blue Cross) had negotiated with the doctors. The insurance was there for peace of mind should anything major happen to any of us. This was back in the late 90’s and it cost just under $200/month to have this. We had been paying $500/mo as our share of the employer provided health care coverage, so this really saved us a lot.

Hi there! I’m not sure if this is what you meant but I believe that Home Depot, Starbucks and I think Price Club offer health benefits to PT employees. I am a mostly SAHM, but I do work a few nights and a weekend day at a retail shop for extra money, when DH is home with the kids. It might be doable for you too, at one of these places, and get those medical benefits.

Is you DH self-employed? Sometimes professional organizations offer health plans too. Maybe do a little internet surfing to see if there are any groups he could join. Good luck!
