Warhammer 40,000 and the Star of Chaos

Hello, I am new to this forum so…I guess this question (of many 😃 ) can go under this subforum

Anyway, as an avid Warhammer 40k player, I was surfing the net one day looking for “fluff” (the lore), and ended up looking for the eight pointed chaos star (if you have no idea what i’m talking about, just google “chaos star warhammer” or something along these lines. Anyway…). Immediatly, wikipedia pops up and lists it among OCCULT symbols (yes, together with pentagrams and nazi lightings) and even links it to freakin’ ALEISTER CROWLEY (FYI, he’s one of the most “important” sorcerers and occultists of the last century).

Last time I heard, the symbol originated from the fantasy of the famous writer Michael Moorcock (and it has been promptly copyrighted by Games Workshop), who had no ties wathsoever to mysterious cults and the likes. Sooo…

Does anyone know the answer to my dilemma? Is it just a harmless, made-up symbol or am I about to open the gates of Hell? (And, besides jokes…really, an answer is most appreciated)
 
It is fluff mate. Overthinking it my friend. I am not 100% sure Mr. Moorcock created the symbol but that is all it is. Don’t over think it. Btw I play most of the Eldar stuff, well more Dark Eldar but mix in Craftworld, Corsairs and even 'Quins.

Dude, I think you nailed my greatest weakness. Yes, I googled around and I’m pretty sure Moorcock’s the author. Well, that’s a tremendous relief.

Also, cool! Got some 'Quins too - though most of my army is made up of Space Marines (Ultramarines and Blood Angels) and lots - BIG LOTS - of Boyz.
 
Awesome! Never tried Orcs. Space Marines just aren’t my thing though.
 
LOL. Just not into the lore. Give me evil space elves any day of the week though.
 
While it’s true that some occultists have taken to use the chaos star, it’s origins are just for fantasy stories.

I used to play Space Marines back in the day for a while, before I moved on to Orks and settled on them. Then it got two expensive to play, at least for me.

Oh, I get it. It’s like the “horned hands”, the Italian symbol born to ward off evil (and worldwide metal icon) but adopted by LaVeyan satanism because…reasons, I guess?

Well, fine by me. If it was only adopted subsequently by some weirdos it’s fine by me - I mean, since its origins are purely fictional, and it comes from no previous culture, it has no real power, I guess. Besides, it depends on the way they use it - maybe they just use it as a way to represent the idea of Chaos (as, thank God, there’s no such thing as immaterium in real life) and not like an “evocation symbol” like, say, a pentagram.

I mean, even if they did, what are they going to conjure? Papa Nurgle? 😃
