Hope this is the proper place to ask this question…

Was Adam a priest? If so, what was he called to sacrifice and why? I know that Christ is the New Adam in which He is Priest, Prophet, and King. But does that mean that Adam was a priest as well? Was his duty to guard and tend the garden (which was a sanctuary so-to-speak) a priestly and prophetic duty? Did his dominion over all that God created fall under Kingship? In regards to offering a sacrifice, I do know that Cain and Abel were called to offer one which evidently led to the first fratricide but was Adam called to sacrifice as well before the fall? Hope this question makes sense.

God Bless…

Based on two bible studies with Jeff Cavins here is my answer. Yes, I believe he was a priest. Until the establishment of the Levitical priesthood, the first born son was called to be the family’s spiritual head (priest). The Levitical priesthood was established by God in response to the "first borns’ failures to fulfill this role.
What he was supposed to sacrifice was himself. When Eve encountered the serpant, what did he do? Nothing. What should he have done? I believe he two acceptable choices. 1) swallow his pride and admit to God that he was scared and ask for help, or 2) act to protect the garden as God had commanded, no matter what the consequences, hoping that even if the worst would happen, God would make things right.

Some say that the number two is used in scripture to represent the Church. So, Christ sent out his disciples by twos to preach the Word.

So, Adam and Eve represent a picture of the Church in the garden of Eden (heaven, symbollically). In the context of Genesis, they were the Church.

Meditate on the parallels between Adam and Christ. Adam was put into a deep “sleep” – a word used no where else in scripture that means a very deep sleep close to death (according to Strong’s Concordance). And, something came out of his side that God used to form Eve, and thus to establish this church in the garden.

Likewise, God sent his Son to die on the cross. The blood which flowed from His side was necessary to create Christ’s church. Perhaps the expression of his priesthood was in the longing he had for a partner suitable for himself, the longing that God recognized and satisfied.
