Was at least the Communion valid?

I went to Mass the past Sunday evening. Father felt a cold coming on and advised he would not be distributing Communion (there’s a veritable army of extraordinary ministers). At any rate, after the sign of peace he sat down. There was no Lamb of God, “Lord I am not worthy,” and Father did not take Communion himself. Was this a valid Mass and did I receive a valid Communion? The Communion hymn was “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” The whole Mass seemed a bit off that night.

While a cold that might possibly be the flu perhaps justifies Father choosing not to distribute Communion, he had a responsibility to receive Communion himself (under both species). If he was too sick to do so, then he should not have celebrated Mass that night. As for the rest, no, he should not have left out the Agnus Dei or other standard prayers of the Mass, and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” is not an appropriate Communion hymn. But, on the upside, you reported nothing in your post that would have invalidated Communion. (There is no such thing as an “invalid Mass.” A Mass is either licit or illicit; it is the consecration of the eucharistic species that can be either valid or invalid.)
