Was divorce the reason for priestly celibacy?

I was just speaking with a gentleman who saw my Catholic bummer stickers. He argued with me that priestly celibacy came about because way back when, in Italy, “they” were worried about the priest divorce rate decimating the Church so they decided to require celibacy. He told me to “go look it up, google it”. Will you please provide me with web links to refute this accusation? Thanks,
