Was I wrong to receive Communion today?

Okay. This has taken a very strange twist. If you read my original posting please continue to read this post. If you haven’t read my original posting, please do so before continuing.

Since my original posting this “anxiety” thing has happened again during Mass. Today I went Mass and felt great. I’d eaten a decent breakfast and lots of fluids, etc. Everything was good until we started the Profession of Faith. Midway through my heart started palpitating, I couldn’t speak, got dizzy, knees weak and to the point of feeling faint. Again this only happens during Mass. I sat down for then and for the Prayers of the Faithful. I felt so lightheaded. When the collections started I left the pew and went outside the nave but in the area where I could still hear Mass. Stayed there until Communion, received, then took a seat in the back. I felt weak but stayed until the priest exited. Then I left. Was fine afterwards.

My oldest brother (10 years difference), who once was studying to be an Episcopal priest but is now back in the Roman Catholic church and is an EEM, came over today to watch football. While we’re all sitting around he starts telling us how, three weeks ago, while offering Communion, he felt weak, shaky, faint, just as I described my symptoms! Everything he described is EXACTLY what I felt! He said it’s happened every Mass since then! I WAS STUNNED!!! He even remarked later that was he was talking he could see the shock on my face.

Both of us compared experiences and they are happening only at Mass and exactly the same symptoms. Both of us have eaten well before Mass, been calm, yet the problem still manifests. We go to differnent parishes, btw.

I’m really weirded out by this. We are 10 years different with 2 other brothers in between and one younger than me. We are the only two brothers that attend church. We are the only two that believe in the True Presence. And we are experiencing the EXACT SAME symptoms almost starting at the same time! And only DURING MASS!! I don’t know what to make of this. We haven’t seen each other except at big family gatherings so I dont’ know why we’d experience the same thing at the same time in different places.

I almost feel like something BIG is about to happen spiritually and we’re being prepared. Man, I dunno!

I’m gonna make an appointment with a priest this week to discuss it. It’s just too weird and disruptive to my Mass experience. I’ve never had this happen but it started almost to the day when it started for my brother.

I’d still tell you to make sure you see your GP and possibly (don’t be offended by this) a psychiatrist or counsellor before you jump to conclusions about your problems having a supernatural cause.

Hypoglycemia is very common and can be more about the types of food you’ve been eating rather than how much or little. I know if I were to have a sugary cereal or sweet rolls for breakfast it sometimes triggers an attack. Some types of fruit will do it too.

I’ve been tested for diabetes many times, and am not diabetic. Only figured out what was happening when I was tested DURING an attack and my blood sugar was abnormal.

Hopefully a sensible priest would tell you the same - it’s a one in a million chance that what you’re experiencing is genuinely supernatural, and it’s highly dangerous not to properly rule out natural causes first.

If your brother is family, he may have the same physical/mental triggers that you do. Genetics’ll do that to you.

If you lock your knees for long time you can get these symptoms and even faint.

Remote chance it could be early signs of heart problems, but unusual for both to have this same problem.

Hi all,

Something strange happened to me today during Mass. Actually, this is the second time this has happened to me. Please let me explain:

After a long period of being in mortal sin and not going to confession but still going to Mass I made a firm committment to amend my life 2 weeks ago. I went to confession on Saturday 2 weeks ago and then attended Mass alone on Sunday. During Mass, the Our Father specifically, I felt very weak, lightheaded and shaky. During Consecration I began to shake uncontrollably and started sweating profusely. I thought I was going to faint! I left just as Communion was starting because I thought I would pass out if I went up. I made it home okay and got better afterward.

Today at Mass with my wife and daughter the same thing happened! But this time it happened just as we started the Confiteor. Same exact symptoms. This time I left my wife and daughter and went into the narthex to sit on a bench. I was in terrible shape Very weak, lightheaded and shaky. I stayed there during the Mass and could listen and say the prayers but did not stand or kneel. Just sat there. When Communion started I briskly, but weakly, walked up the aisle and joined my wife and daughter. I felt ill when I received Communion and immediately exited the church.

My question is, was I wrong to receive Holy Communion when I wasn’t feeling good? Did I sin because I didn’t fully participate in the Mass yet received the Eucharist and then immediately left?

I think these two events occurred because I didn’t eat before Mass. I’ve been working out a lot lately and am thinking my body needs more sugars/salts now. It felt like low blood pressure (hypotension). But my concern is whether or not I sinned in receiving Communion while this condition was in progress.
