Question: Was it a mortal sin to eat meat on Fridays in 1969 or at anytime before then?
Background: Today, when a woman was asked if she was a Catholic, she said she was an ex-Catholic. When asked why, she said that when she was 12 years old (around 1969), she was told that it was a mortal sin to eat meat on Friday. Catholic doctrine apparently changed and meatless Fridays are no longer mandatory each week. She said it’s ridiculous for people to be burning in hell now for eating meat back then, but today people can eat meat on Fridays without going to hell.
