Unfortunately, the Scripture provides very little detail about St. Joseph…so we’re forced to resort to a lot of conjecture.

It is probably a safe assumption that he and Jesus had a fairly typical, healthy, loving father/son relationship (aside from the fact that Jesus never sinned, so the teenage years were probably easier for Mary and Joseph than they were for most other families ;)).

St. Joseph was a holy man and probably taught Jesus his trade, took care of him, instructed him in the faith, and served as an example of manhood and fatherhood.

Think of the ideal father – patient but firm, attentive to the proper raising of his son, providing for the family financially and protecting them from harm – and you are probably pretty close to St. Joseph.

I think the Father wouldn’t have entrusted His only Son to an earthly foster-father who was anything less than a great dad, someone who would be trustworthy, dependable, be close to Jesus, give Him the love, nurturing and guidance that any boy needs.

Besides which, Jesus made Himself subject to Joseph as much as to Mary. Scripture says so. That couldn’t be unless Joseph was a good father.

He was chosen by the Father. Mary was chosen by the Father. Enough said. Would the Father choose someone other than the perfect person for His Son? Consider Mary. She was even immaculately conceived, as she would be the new Ark of the Covenant.

We have no idea how close Jesus was with either May or Joseph. Pure speculation.
That depends if you believe certain private revelations.

City of God, by Mary of Agreda, and The Lowly life… by Ann Emmerich amongst other writings of saints shed some light on the early life of Jesus.

My opinion is that Jesus was very close to Joseph.

How could He have such a close relationship with God the Father, if He wasnt close to His earthly father? Your relationship with your own father affects that with God the father.

Speaking of private revelations, the best life of St. Joseph that I’ve seen is by an 18th century nun, Mother Maria Baij called the Life of St. Joseph. It’s available in paperback, and was recently translated.

Private revelations are just that…private. Not a matter of “we” as I noted.

No, you’re wrong. Although private revelation is entirely optional, those revelations that have been found profitable for pious reading AND BELIEF, and are not opposed to Catholic Teaching, receive the approbation of the local Bishop, and often many Bishops. The Bishops themselves will often recommend them for private reading and meditation.

Therefore private revelation can definitely be a matter of “we.” It is not Church teaching, nor does it add to the deposit of Faith, but there is MUCH PROFIT to be had from reading the approved writings of private revelations, for THOSE who approach these things in humble and pious affection. But if some approved private revelations appear incredible, there is NO obligation to believe it. It is there only for the benefit of THOSE SOULS who are receptive to it.

It might also be observed that many visionaries, and writings of Saints fall into this category including St. Bernadette, Lourdes, Fatima, Our Lady of Guadalupe etc. So to poo-poo private revelations out of hand is unfortunate.

There is an amazing stained glass window in St. Mary’s Church in Mt. Angel, OR. It depicts St. Joseph’s death and shows him lying in a bed with Mary, Jesus and an angel at his side. Absolutely beautiful and such a powerful image.

In Christ,
Rand

You note specific and very rare examples of private revelations. I was commenting on so-called private revelations in general. Ok?
