Liberation theology, of which not much has been heard for two decades, is back in the news. But what is not being mentioned is its origins. It was not invented by Latin American Catholics. It was developed by the KGB. The man who is now the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, secretly worked for the KGB under the code name “Mikhailov” and spent four decades promoting liberation theology, which we at the top of the Eastern European intelligence community nicknamed Christianized Marxism.

Thoughts?

But let’s also not forget the First Reading on April 12:

“The community of believers was of one heart and mind,
and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own,
but they had everything in common.
With great power the apostles bore witness
to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus,
and great favor was accorded them all.
There was no needy person among them,
for those who owned property or houses would sell them,
bring the proceeds of the sale,
and put them at the feet of the apostles,
and they were distributed to each according to need.”

The voluntary cooperation of the early Christians can in** no way **be compared to Marxism, Communism, or Liberation Theology.

This is a spoof right?
That’s what I initially thought, but after having read this article and some other pieces about Russian involvement, it does seem plausible. The author is a former intelligence officer during the Cold War, and Kirill does have a few skeletons in his closet.
I’m not a Catholic, and I’m still relatively new and reading up on things, but I always thought Liberation theology was something else.

liberation theology developed in certain contexts, especially South America, and ultimately it did start to use Marxist analysis, as developed in critical theory, to help describe it’s processes.

Note that Marxist analysis/critical theory is not the same as Marxism. It’s equally problemmatic though.

So Liberation Theology wasn’t started by Marxists, but by Catholics, who initially used the Gospel and later used Marxist analysis to help articulate their theology.

Thomas Groome, the “Catholic” Religious Ed guru, uses Marxist analysis/critical theory for his philosophy of Religious Education, and I believe this has caused significant problems in Catholic schools in North America and the English Speaking world where teachers have used this in good faith. He wasn’t funded by the Kremlin though.
