Was Mary Just An Average Teenager?

On more than one occasion ,I have heard a priest refer to Mary as just another teenager, while conceding the fact of her Immaculate conception.It is my belief however that having been conceived free of the stain of original sin, Mary would have exhibited in some manner, the reality of her state.While biologically of course a teenager,would not her composure in some way reflect a knowledge of, the reality of the closeness of her relationship to God?Would she not have been posessed of a strong love of God and a desire to dedicate herself totally to His service?At the time of the Annunciation Mary was quite young.She most readily responded to the angel without purportedly ,seeking the advice of anyone.Refering to Our Blessed Mother as just another teenager seems to me a failure to apppreciate for whatever reason the reality of the situation.A most important consideration.What do you think?

I think you are trying to find a fault in a priest where there is none. I don’t see anything wrong with what you say he said. I think you are being over-sensitive.

But she may not have appeared extra special to those around her. Think of the friend or co-worker who is kind, never gossips, avoids dirty jokes, etc. You recognize that she is a good person but may never realize her total openness to God’s will because she doesn’t put herself forward or talk about herself. So, to others, Mary may have appeared an unremarkable young Jewish woman (though a young Jewish woman of that time may not have been much like an American teenager of today).

Exactly, and in her humility she hid the extent of her virtues.

although she was free of all sin, but not the affects of original. She could feel hungry, tired, cold, she could feel pain just like the rest of us.

Physiologically, Mary was an average teenager.

Spiritually, she was above the average Jewish teenager living in Palestine at that time. Traditional tells us that she was devoted to the Scriptures, spent time in the Temple, etc. The Annunciation shows her as a teenager who was absolutely devoted to GOD. “Be it done unto me according to Thy Word”.

I couldn’t have said it better myself.Mary was the issue of Saintly parents. Her status was as that of a saint from the beginning. Which is what we needed to focus on as an example to all of us to imitate,rather thinking of her simply as a teenager for what that might imply.

Our Blessed Mother was the pinnacle of God’s creation in her beauty, divine and natural knowledge and wisdom, humility, modesty and sanctity. She was not “just another teenager.”
