Was Mary "raped" by God?

Living in the Bible belt I thought I heard every anti-catholic, anti-Marian statement but this one takes the cake:eek:

A statement like this goes to show how much disrespect so many so call “Christians” have for The Blessed Mother.
How could a person who call themselves “God-fearing” make a statement about God like that.
The so called “Christians” say the love Jesus, they have a personal relationship with Him, and call Him Friend, yet they mock at any chance they get at His Mother.

An acquaintance who is a former minister and regularly appears in public with a clerical collar, and identifies himself as “Pastor…(x)” laid this on me today, to wit:

I don’t find justification for this in Luke Chap 1, but he says that Mary was already pregnant when the angel appeared to her, to him, proving his point that Mary was raped by God.

I don’t believe that for a second. My question is, Does anybody know of a denomination anyplace that pedals this kind of blasphemy or baloney exegesis as truth?
I actually find the suggestion perverse and very offensive. 😦

God knew before hand what the BVM’s response would be, acted with prior knowledge of her consent. Therefore the act was consensual. If it was consensual then it could not be rape, so your Pastor friend is in total error in his reasoning. 😉

Rape involves a power-relationship and while it is true Almighty God has a power relationship with us, it is not only right but logic demands that is the way it MUST BE. He is Creator, we mere creatures. 👍

In rape, it is the rapists sole interests that are served. With God His power relationship with us, is in our best interests.

Blessings and peace

Do not take her age as an automatic sign of ignorance. The ancient people married younger than we do today. Her answer shows that she knew where babies came from.

Absolutely not! To suggest such a thing is blasphemous in my opinion.

Dear Crumpy,

The wording of KJV of Luke 1:31 is as follow : “And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.” The angel of Gabriel did say “shalt” which in according to English Grammer I learn, meant something in the future at that time. Why did that pastor ever claim that Mary was already pregnant when the angel of Gabriel spoke to her?

Why do so many fundamentalist Protestants seem to really hate Mary so much? I can understand their dislike of the way Catholics seem to give her so much attention, but you’d think that would make them hate Catholicism, not Mary the person.

Personally as a Jew I do not feel offended by Mary the way I might by Jesus, because no one ever killed Jews in her name, only in his. I have absolutely no problem with her at all (besides, us Jewish girls need to stick together! 😉

FOLKS do you have a hard time staying on topic?

The question isn’t a debate on Mary and God. The question asked which denominations promuglated this idea.

Sorry Rachael.

To my knowledge, no one teaches this. I am aware of some religions that teach that God impregnated her by normal means. Crazy, man, crazy.

You are perfectly right. I, therefore, am unsubscribing from this thread.

Hey! Don’t blame the Bible Belt for this one! No self-respecting Evangelical or Fundamentalist would sit still for this for one second. Hmm. Think I 'll look around to see if I can’t find out who believes this.

As far as I remember, this teaching was brought up by the so-called rationalist writers of the Enlightenment period in America. Thomas Paine, who wrote “The Age of Reason”, was probably the first man to refer to Mary’s pregnancy as a form of rape:

**It is not the existence, or non-existence, of the persons that I trouble myself about; it is the fable of Jesus Christ, as told in the New Testament, and the wild and visionary doctrine raised thereon, against which I contend. The story, taking it as it is told, is blasphemously obscene. It gives an account of a young woman engaged to be married, and while under this engagement she is, to speak plain language, debauched by a ghost, under the impious pretence (Luke, chap. i., ver. 35), that “the Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee.” Notwithstanding which, Joseph afterward marries her, cohabits with her as his wife, and in his turn rivals the ghost. This is putting the story into intelligible language, and when told in this manner, there is not a priest but must be ashamed to own it. (The Age of Reason Part II, Section 14).

Crumpy, did this person explain why he used such a pejorative and highly charged phrase? A phrase, by the way, which I think would offend nearly all Christians as most Protestants also teach about the Virgin Birth, and the love and mercy of God. One does not have to pray to the Blessed Virgin Mary and believe in the Communion of Saints to believe in the Virgin Birth.

I can think of a few TV Evangelists who would probably lynch this guy for saying this. Okay, maybe “lynch” is an exaggeration, but they would be really offended and would not sit back calmly and ignore it.

To me, for someone to use such a phrase is a sign that they seek to offend and anger. As a consequence, it would seem unlikely to me that such a person would be open to any response, no matter how logical.

With this in mind and then considering how this man dresses, it seems to me he does not have both oars in the water.

Thomas Paine was a famous atheist and anti-cleric.

Good Lord! This is ok to debate but naming a political candidate is abanned topic:confused:

No to the ideology of a political figure but yes to the theology of lunatics.

I would like to share to everyone what happened to me last year. Perhaps, you may realize how important praying to the Blessed Mother (and Her Rosary) is to me.

I was born and lived in a province since childhood, but after getting a job in Manila, Philippines (9 years ago), I started living a sinful life. If I had died earlier, I would surely have plunged into the burning sulfur of hell without any doubt or question.

I sinned and sinned, and didn’t even bother to pray, stayed away from God, forgot God, worked myself to death, focused on my career, increased my knowledge by going to a graduate school and increased my wealth and worldy possessions.

However, our Lord God had mercy on my soul and started calling me back, thru the Blessed Mother Mary:

1st Call: Two years ago, my college friend died. He was my classmate, same age as mine (32), with the same promising career as a chemical engineer. He and his career is gone now, at a very young age. I was shocked and felt fear. What if it was I who died?

Effect : I only felt fear, but did nothing to repent.

2nd Call: Last year, I received an email from my college friend that our dearest and most intelligent professor died at the age of 40+. He and his intelligence is gone now, also at a very young age.

Effect : My fear increased, but did not repent.

3rd Call: In August of last year, my very rich boss suddenly died of cancer at the age of 49. Her money and enormous wealth did not save her.

Effect : This time I was really struck hard, started to pray a little and started reflecting on my life, but did not repent.

4th Call: Last year again, I was bed ridden for a week due to kidney problem. The pain I had, felt like I was gonna die. I started praying hard to God, to forgive me for my transgressions. But after few weeks of being healed, I went back to my sinful life.

5th and Final Call: One week after celebrating the 75th birthday of my mother last year, she became very ill. She was brought to the hospital and was struggling between life and death. The hospital bills have drained all my savings, and left me with loans. After two months of struggle, and with no more resources to fight for her life, she died before Christmas, and so we had the most sorrowful Christmas ever.

This recent events moved me to change my life. It made me realize many things:
  1. First, our life is very short, and death which seems to be far away is really approaching to each one of us.
  2. Second, What is professional career for, if God takes away my life right now.
  3. Third, Worldy intelligence will be blotted out once the Lord God called us back.
  4. Fourth, Money and Wealth cannot save us from death, once the Lord has retrieved the life He gave us.
  5. Fifth, not to invoke the Lord God to anger, for His hands are mighty and powerful.
  6. Lastly, that I should be thankful to the Lord and the Blessed Mother in bringing me back to grace.
But, the temptation is very strong. It seems like a magnet pulling me down. And the Wretched One does not want me to lead a better life. So, I realized going back to grace is a gift from Heaven. But remaining in grace is another hard thing to accomplish.

So what I did is I prayed the 15 mysteries of the Holy Rosary everyday. I told the Blessed Mother sincerely that I will pray Her 15 mysteries everyday, in return for the favor of protecting me and not abandoning me especially in times of trouble. And she did, now I am completely changed. The Blessed Mother showered bountiful graces upon me which I do not deserve. And everytime I look back at my past, I felt sorrow for having mislead my life for so long and for having hurt God with my sins.

The spiritual battle is still ON and the temptations are still lurking around. But I guess it will never end while I am alive. But the most important thing is I have the Blessed Mother by my side now thru the Holy Rosary. I also have Jesus by my side, thru the Sacred Heart and Divine Mercy Chaplet (which gives me so much peace) and the Holy Eucharist (which is the food of my soul).

And we have all the angels and saints by our side who desires as much to save our souls.

Now, these are the reasons why I am praying the Rosary, and why I am urging others to do so also.

I think its some of the infidels who promulgate this idea. Since we dont believe that God interferes with human life, we suspect that Mary was raped. And with this shame, she made up the story that it was god’s child.

You know, I was in a graduate political science seminar and a radical feminist uttered this blasphemy.

I was so shocked it just destroyed the rest of the day for me. I was physically stunned.

It got me to thinking, in the weeks that followed, about how I viewed religion and the church. It ended up being a jog back toward being a practicing Christian.

That’s really just an unpardonable thing to say. I don’t shock easy. Finally, to be sure, it made me think much less of feminists and this particular one.

Granted, it’s much worse, but along the same line as pro-abortionists who refer to a baby in her mother’s womb as a parasite. 😦

Regarding which denomination… I have found that people who believe the most outlandish things do not belong to a “denomination” but rather, they are taught by VERY fringe “Pastors” who, without any legitimate study, teach an assortment of totally bizarre things. It’s quite sad actually. But that’s the fallout from the thought that the Bible can be interpreted by individuals.
