I was reading about St Teresa Bendedicta, aka Edith Stein. Followed a few links and ended up reading about Max Scheler. Since his first marriage ended in divorce, what is his standing with the Catholic Church? Also, what is the church’s view on Phenomenology? I read that Pope John Paul II was a follower of Scheler’s philosophy.

My understanding is that Scheler was a fallen away Catholic who nevertheless greatly respected Catholicism. He was responsible for bringing Edith Stein and also Dietrich von Hildebrand (another phenomenologist) to the Church. I have been listening to a series of interviews Alice von Hildebrand did for EWTN on her late Husband and his work, and she mentions Scheler a number of times. Here’s the link to all the interviews, but the part where she talks about Scheler is towards the end of the first interview and near the beginning of the second.
