was my Confirmation valid?

okay, so I’m seventeen years old and was confirmed last year on my birthday (totally a coinsidence) but my sponser was suppsedly in the process of getting her last marriage annuled. She is a Catholic and had a divorce and was remarried outside the church…at the time of my Confirmation I knew the divorce and the marriage outside the church was wrong but i thought she was getting it annuled and i wanted her to be my sponser because she is my godmother. Was it wrong to have her as my sponser and was my Confirmation valid? Was it a mortal sin to allow this?

It was not a mortal sin. I wouldn’t even think it was a venial sin, but if it makes you feel better you can talk to a priest at your next reconciliation.

Your confirmation was performed by a Bishop in good standing, I assume, that is the part that is important.

Confirming your baptism is really between you, the Bishop and God (by way of the bishop). Of course it is a matter of form to have a sponsor to help lead you, but I can not imagine it would in any way invalidate your receiving this sealing sacrament.

That doesn’t invalidate the Confirmation. It should have been done differently, but also keep in mind that since you were 16 at the time (maybe even 15 when you chose your sponsor?), the person who should have stopped her from being a sponsor was the priest who presented you-with-your-sponsor to the bishop. It was his obligation to know that the sponsor was qualified before presenting her to the bishop for this role.

you committed no sin of any kind, and yes the sacrament is valid, and would be even without a sponsor. you were right to ask your godmother, she is the first person to ask, and it is not your fault she was not able to complete the annulment process in time. I hope you can be a sort of “sponsor” for her as she continues with this process of getting right with the Church, and I am sure you will continue to be a blessing for her
