Was St Joseph a good father

I dare to speculate that God chose well, that Joseph responded in kind, to become the best of all fathers. I still hope one day to accomplish my third pilgrimage to the shrine if St Joseph in Montreal.

There’s very little in scripture about what kind of father Joseph was. But for myself, I am impressed by the brief glimpse we get at his thoughts and actions in Matthew chapters 1 and 2. Especially in chapter 2, Joseph is warned in a dream that the child is in danger, and the Scripture says, “So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt”. I love that instantaneous obedience, getting up in the middle of the night to protect the child and his mother. There are two other instances in those two chapters when God speaks to Joseph, and he instantly obeys. That bodes well to the state of his heart, and for good fatherhood.

I doubt very much Jesus ever said to Joseph, “You can’t tell me what to do you’re not my Father!” LOL.

I recall reading one time, perhaps even here on CAF, that God’s providence made sure that Jesus bore a certain resemblance to Joseph, so that people wouldn’t speculate that perhaps Joseph wasn’t “really his father”.
