Was St. Joseph a perpetual virgin?

I have heard that the church teaches that St. Joseph was perpetually virgin. I know that Orthodox churches teach that he was a widower, and that Jesus’ brothers and sisters mentioned in the bible were actually from Joseph’s first marriage. I understand that Catholics do not believe this and understand why, so you don’t have to explain that to me. I’m not questioning this teaching, but I wonder, though, whether the catholic teaching absolute on this (e.g. declared infallibly)? Is it possible that it could ever be revised? Could it become an obstacle for unity with Orthodox Christians in the future? Thank-you for any information you could provide on this.
 
The Catholic Church has no official stance on whether St. Joseph was a perpetual virgin or a widower. Catholics are free to embrace either theory.
