Was the Son made flesh when born into the world or was he always eternally in a physical form?

So was He spirit at first? This feels like a weird question that I should know the answer too, but here goes I guess.

The Son of God, the second person of the Holy Trinity, existed from before all ages, eternally. But the Incarnation of the Son of God in the flesh happened at a particular point in time. So the Son always existed, but did not take on human nature and a human body until that point.

Was His human nature lost when he ascended back to the Father?

He ascended into Heaven, body and soul. He has what is termed ‘a glorified body’.

No. The Son is fully God and fully man, and at the Resurrection and Ascension, raised up human nature so that it could be capable of the same. That was the whole point of the Incarnation to begin with. Sin incurs an infinite sent against an infinite God, such that only God could pay the debt; it would not suffice for man to attempt it. And if God had simply wiped out the debt, this would not have most fittingly healed what was done to human nature. So God became man, the most fitting way to have the effect of redemption rendered to our souls, such that we could be raised up to God.

The Word Seconf person of the Holy Trinity incarnate God (Holy Trinity )is Spirit John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being.John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

Galatians 4: 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son(Jesus), born of a woman(Gen 3:15 Mary), born under the law, 5 in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. 26 But the other woman corresponds to the Jerusalem above; she is free, and she is our mother.

[240] Jesus revealed that God is Father in an unheard-of sense: he is Father not only in being Creator; he is eternally Father in relation to his only Son, who is eternally Son only in relation to his Father: "No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."64

241 For this reason the apostles confess Jesus to be the Word: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”; as “the image of the invisible God”; as the “radiance of the glory of God and the very stamp of his nature”.65

[242] Following this apostolic tradition, the Church confessed at the first ecumenical council at Nicaea (325) that the Son is “consubstantial” with the Father, that is, one only God with him.66 The second ecumenical council, held at Constantinople in 381, kept this expression in its formulation of the Nicene Creed and confessed “the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father”.67

Would you mind clarifying this a bit? The Second Person of the Holy Trinity, the Son of God, when incarnate, was not Spirit, but also flesh. That’s what incarnate means. Your wording is not terribly clear here, and we must be careful with regards to Christology and fundamental doctrines of the nature of God, lest we fall into heresy.

Another related question: if both Father and Son are eternal in what sense can we mean that, since a father begets a son and thus has seniority?

It’s the eternal generation of the Son, the Son was begotten and not made by the father yet they eternally co-existed.
It’s addressed in the Niceno–Constantinopolitan Creed:

“And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God
begotten from the Father before all ages

It’s a great divine mystery, I don’t understand how that works exactly but I take it as fact.|

Hello Fr ACEGC,

Can you clarify something Fr. In Genesis 1:26 “…God said: Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness” and if God is three persons in one, in what form and image was God referring to if not human bodily form?

To say that man is created in the image and likeness of God refers to how man’s nature is capable of participating in the goodness of God and the truth of God, or rather in God who is goodness and truth. Thus, we have reason and free will to know the truth and to choose the good, and thus participate in God.

In one way the timeline of incarnation doesn’t much matter, because for God all times are present. So although the Second Person of the Trinity took on a human nature at a particular point in time, for the Eternal Word, all times are present!
