I am a member of the RCIA team at my parish. Each week we take anonymous written questions from the participants, then answer those questions at the next week’s session. I’ve been assigned to answer the following: “If having sexual relations with a family member is a sin, then how could the children of Adam and Eve procreate without sinning?”
My initial reaction is to say that the Church does not insist on literal interpretation of the book of Genesis, and that the story of Adam and Eve is more like a parable than an historical account. Thus, it can be inferred that there were more than one “first couple” from whom humankind actually descended. Is this correct?
