Was there really a Pope Joan?

A friend of mine recently asked me if I knew that there was a female pope in the history of the church. Awhile ago, I watched the movie Pope Joan. At that time I was sceptical but later read in some Catholic blog or story that that rumor was just that, a rumor. Can you please clear this rumor up for me?
