So the other day I was in our backyard, tossing a baseball with my older brother who is currently engaged. I was explaining to him a person (who my brother does not know and I’m confident will never know) who is planning on getting married but is immature in certain respects, in my opinion.
Anyhow, I sort of started to gossip about this person and revealed to my brother that this person had been unfaithful to his girlfriend at one point. I mentioned to my brother the person’s first name and then caught myself and made sure not to reveal the person’s last name.
In all honesty, I am aware of the serious nature of the sin of detraction and how it can be a mortal sin. I am also aware of how evil it can be to gossip about others simply to be a busy-body. But the reason I revealed this serious fault of another was because I knew my brother did not know this person, so the person’s reputation could not be hurt, and I was trying to use this person as an example.
Looking back at this case, I feel like I should not have gossiped about this person’s wrongdoing, since I am not perfect myself and should be careful not to pick out the splinter in the eye of other people before examining the beam in my own.
But would anybody say that I committed the sin of detraction? II can be a bit scrupulous at times, but I want to learn more about this sin so I don’t hurt others in the future.
Thank you so much for your help.
