Was this a valid Mass?

My son and daughter attended Mass a couple of mornings ago. The 1st reading was read and then the Deacon went to read the Gospel. However, he didn’t actually read the Gospel. He read the 1st reading instead. I’m sure it was all pure human error without nefarious intent. But, it leads me to ask:

Since the Gospel was not read, was this a valid Mass?

For the Mass to be invalid the intention of the priest would have to be to not consecrate the bread and wine according to the precepts of the Church. The misreading of the Gospel/unintentional leaving it out, does not invalidate the Mass.

I’m not a theologian, so I’ll defer to the judgments of other more learned than I on this one.

But…it reminds me of the time when I was in college and instead of reading the first reading, I read the gospel. Simply turned to the wrong page and just read it like I had been doing it all my life. When did I realize that I had strayed off the beaten path? When I heard myself saying, “The Gospel of the Lord”, and I thought, “That doesn’t sound quite right…”

After a brief consultation with the priest, I read the first reading and psalm, and he read the Gospel. It took my years to live that one down.

While I didn’t read the Gospel (thanks be, considering I’m a woman ), I didn’t read the Psalm after the reading. The priest had to do it. I wasn’t a regular lector, you see, I was doing the reading for a special Mass for the Knights of Columbus and Ladies Auxiliary. No one told me I was supposed to lead the Psalm, as well, so it wasn’t all my fault. But, being over 50 and experienced in making many a social faux pas, I got over pretty quickly.

Since the lectionery has three years in it…cycle A,B and C. once the wrong year was used…during a weekday liturgy…but that did not invalidate the mass in any way. Humans do the mass…occasionally there is a minor slip.
