Was this considered disrespectful?

I am sorry that I post so many threads here. I am scrupulous and I don’t really trust myself anymore.
Someone came and called me to hear something or else I wouldn’t believe them. So, having an idea of what it was, they took me. It was a parent that had fallen asleep on the toilet (my parent; my assumption was correct). I tried not to laugh because it would be mean. But when the person who took me started to explain the first time this happened I allowed myself to laugh. I enventually left (after the person waking my parent up).

This may have been the result of alcohol that made one of my parents fall asleep. I wasn’t sure about the first time but it was likely. So, was this disrespect to my parent and/or supporting someone’s sin? Was it mortal or venial?
Thank you

Disrespectful? Maybe. Mortal sin? It sounds like your parent was in an alcohol induced coma in the bathroom. Was it from a night of drinking and (s)he was hugging the toilet in a pile of vomit? Or, like may happen when people become exhausted from a day of work, sit and relax, and find themselves asleep on the toilet (my first thought from reading your vague message).

For the latter, give 'em a break. For the former, it may be time to help that person overcome a possible alcohol addiction. Or it may have been the first time it happened, hard to tell from your post. It’s a serious problem that will take a lot of effort from everyone to help that person overcome.

I think the main problem is that you said you “don’t trust yourself anymore.” That was one of the first things that you wrote. Two blind men leading each other will surely fall into the pit. It sounds like you may need to get help over some personal issue. What it is, I do not know. Perhaps a good examination of the conscious and a good Confession will help. At any rate, it will never hurt.

This scenario reminds me of the story of Noah and Ham, one of his sons (See Gen 9:20-27). I won’t judge whether or not this was a sin as I do not know your heart and culpability. I will; however, say with a fair amount of certainty that this was a disrespectful act toward your parent. If I were in your situation, I would apologize to my parent and bring this to your priest the next time I go to confession.

Well, my parent does take in a large amount of alcohol at times but rarely vomits. My parent also falls asleep easily and has a difficult job. This is also the second time this happened.

I am asking the question because I recieved Holy Communion today and am now worrying that I recieved Him while not in the state of grace (I won’t ask you to say if I have a mortal sin on my soul, just if the matter itself is, according to your judgement, a grave matter.)

It was an alcoholsin.
there is nothing funnier than a drunken person.
Now the other person drinks heavily and the mortal sin is ours.
Is that reasonable?

The above has no bearing on what you are asking. Regardless whether your parent’s actions have been repeated in the past or he/she has a difficult job, you should show charity and compassion, not laugh at your parent’s condition.

Again, based on the information that you have provided, I would say that this is grave matter (see the 4th Commandment). As another reference, see the Catechism. I would speak to your priest about the situation. Likewise, I would speak to your parent and apologize.

First of all - don’t be concerned about receiving communion. You were OK…

As to the event and gravity of the sin.
I agree with Tietjen that we are called to be charitable. We are also called to be respectful to our parents. As to whether laughing at someone sleeping on the toilet is sufficiently grave to warrant eternal damnation…I doubt it…add to that the fact that your scruples make it difficult to properly discern both gravity and consent and it seems pretty clear that you have not committed a mortal sin.
Speak to your confessor about the matter next time you go.

Peace
James

you need to talk to your priest ASAP. You need to be under regular spiritual guidance. Going to the internet to ask opinions is NOT going to solve anything. You will not be able to regain proper perspective in this way. You need regular spiritual direction from a priest trained to assist in scrupulosity. He will help you with proper conscience formation.

You MUST undertake to correct this problem, not simply post every little thing on the internet. It will not improve your scrupulosity situation.

On your part? Think about it, how could it be?
