Was THIS Cussing a Mortal Sin?

Please, no accusations of scrupulosity.
I’m up in the air about this one.
This is my one day off from a very high-stress job.
I have AOL dial up which is as slow as death.
I’m getting high-speed internet in the next 2 days or so, but have to upgrade
my Dell Windows XP hardrive to XP-sp2 to be able to use and download the new browsers.
So I call DELL today, and order both a BIG memory upgrade, which order went fine
((although I was being transferred to every office in India, not here in America where these companies get their tax breaks in order to get them to hire AMERICAN workers)).
After completed my memory upgrade purchase,
I proceeded to have to call, again, ANOTHER Dell 800 number, and get transferred all over India to speak to a salesman (very nice fellow) to purchase my SP2 upgrade package, which we can download onto my harddrive by using DellConnect or another online downloading tool. NEITHER TOOL would work. After waiting 10 minutes for DellConnect to download, it would not open. Just WOULD NOT open. ((Mind you, this is wasting my cellphone minutes like mad, too)) So we try another program, accessing it from GOOGLE and click download on it. IT downloads onto my harddrive, after 15 or 20 long minutes, and downloads just fine. It’s THERE. BUT.
I cannot open it. So we reboot. For the first time in seven years, today, this computer, after these downloads, would not reboot. Would not shut down. Would not budge. The screen was not frozen, just the reboot and shutdown commands would not work.
I am already stressed to the max. This is my one day off, I have lots to do, and need to get this taken care of. Getting more and more frustrated. Finally, I shouted, GOOD LORD, isn’t there ANY OTHER WAY we can download this G.D. Upgrade !!!

ONLY, I did not “spell” G.D., I said the words, in frustration and anger.
I apologized to the guy, he understood, saying AOL dialup is like that.
(( AOL dialup was only the SLOWNESS of the download problem. What blew my
stack is that neither of the two downloaded programs, once downloaded, would open from my hard-drive. This is the first time in 7 years, that a downloaded program would NOT open on my hard drive once downloaded. I was ready to tear out my hair, what’s left of it, and take a baseball bat to this computer. My nerves are already frazzled and I don’t need any more complications in my life right now, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many already, and I’m at my wit’s end for a variety of reasons. This nonsense was the last straw, and I cussed and said G.D.))
Was this saying of G.D.under these circumstances a mortal sin in your opinions???

This is the first time, I think in about 8 years, that I have ever even said G.D., even in frustration…I strive like crazy to avoid saying that.
I need to know, because I’m attending evening mass tonight
and wondering if I should stay away from communion
or at least make a confession first. There are those who would tell me, at church,
that under the circumstances, this was venial, but I want to hear from folks like you who do a LOT MORE reading on moral theology. Replies would be appreciated.

One commits a mortal sin when there are simultaneously present: grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent. This sin destroys charity in us, deprives us of sanctifying grace, and, if unrepented, leads us to the eternal death of hell. It can be forgiven in the ordinary way by means of the sacraments of Baptism and of Penance or Reconciliation.

One commits a venial sin, which is essentially different from a mortal sin, when the matter involved is less serious or, even if it is grave, when full knowledge or complete consent are absent. Venial sin does not break the covenant with God but it weakens charity and manifests a disordered affection for created goods. It impedes the progress of a soul in the exercise of the virtues and in the practice of moral good. It merits temporal punishment which purifies.

Various authors distinguish between “profanity” and “Blasphemy” in using or rather misusing God’s name …or that of the Saints etc.

Profanity in this sense is to take what is holy (like the name of God) and use it in a profane (not good ordinary) way …often described as a venial sin (though there can be circumstances making it worse)…(or perhaps even not a sin due to habit …or inadvertence etc)… still of course something not to be done!

Blasphemy on the other hand is objectively gravely sinful…which in this sense would be to use the name of God in a way that expresses hatred etc towards God (or similar…)

Any cussing caused by Microsoft is not mortal. Just kidding, sort of…

Downloading SP2 can be fatal to your computer. I had to do without it on my last laptop because the same thing happened. I would try to install it and it would cause Windows to freeze. I’d have to start it in safe mode and take SP2 off but somehow it got hung between installing and removing. It was a mess.

It would probably be easier just to buy another lap top or netbook.

Really.

In the meantime, if you feel you need confession, then just stay in the pew tonight. If I said G-D there is no way I would feel ready to receive the Lord.

I think Bookcat has provided a sufficient answer to your question and I hope your conscience is eased.

But may I ask, if there is the availability of confession before mass, why not just take it? Or is it the case that you’d need to ask the priest specifically to make one, which understandably can be tricky for busy priests preparing for mass?
