Wasting time at work- a mortal sin?

Today, someone online asked me a question about what they claimed was an error in Jesus’s prophecy about the Second Coming.
It ticked me off, so I spent an hour or so (off an on, 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there) messaging them back.
I ended up staying late to finish all my tasks for the day, but I am sure I could have done more work or even helped others if I had just ignored it to begin with.
Would this technically count as stealing from my employer in a sense? If so, would it be a mortal sin?

It depends on how difficult your work really is and whether there’s time to jack around. I literally have nothing to do at the office so I jack around for 12 hours. They literally pay me to be a body in a seat. This was the best job ever.

I do exactly the same thing. Ten minutes here, five or ten more there. As long as the work gets done and does not suffer I don’t worry about it. I have lots of down time between tasks so I can either do this or sit and read a book in those minutes. Not a big deal. Everything I get paid to do is done very efficiently.

I’d think this depends on a lot of factors. Are you salaried or hourly? Did you lie or deceive somebody to make it appear as if you were working at any given moment when you really weren’t? Are you collaborating on a project with others such that your slacking off affected their work or the amount of time/effort they needed to expend on the project?
