I guess so many people did not do their jobs properly, that an Oprah’s recommendation made this man became a millionaire.

Personally, I think we all give celebrities like Oprah way too much power.

Wonder how many other authors could have pulled the wool over our eyes?
We’ve had the story about the New York Times writer who fictionalized his stories.

I wonder if Oprah will buy all those books back?

I am linking to my other thread because I have another recent example of a fake best seller.

I wonder if Oprah will buy back books? They are not cheap. She should do that. I won’t hold my breath.

AMEN!!

Did anyone else see her interview w/ James yesterday? It was scathing! Sort of like watching the scene of a fatal car accident… you don’t want to look… but you’re drawn to it. She was relentless… and he was so busted.

I don’t get the big deal… so he embelished some of his story. It’s just a book…

I heard that several people are filing a class-action lawsuit against him. I’d love to hear how they feel they were harmed by his story?

I suspect Oprah’s ego was very bruised because this made her look bad. As a result, she took it out on him. I wouldn’t have showed if I were him; he had to know what she’d do. He should’ve just made a public apology though his agent and let it be done.

I think the big deal was that he was on her show a few months ago and claimed the book was a memoir and not fiction. That is a big deal in books.

It just seems almost obviouis that a LOT of people hang on to every word Oprah speaks. It’s almost like gospel, or at least undisputable.

People make mistakes, Oprah relies on her staff to check out the guests and what will be discussed. I’m sure Oprah has the final word and decision. But it comes down to her alone.

Whatever happened to ‘checking out your sources’?

Frey should’ve followed Dan Brown’s lead of writing a novel and prefacing it with a “fact” page. Million Little Pieces would’ve been on the big screen next year.

WHAT are we talking about? Who is “James” and what book?

Can someone clue the rest of us in? (( dying to know what’s going on)))

It was Oprah who recommended “Bridges of Madison County” with high marks in 1995. It was an awful book. Bad writing, ill-developed characters, disgusting concept about a married woman having an affair in her own home while her husband and kids were at the fair…

I never watch Oprah, just happened to catch it during my lunch break at the mall and decided to buy it. I havent’ read a single thing on her reading list since that!

It was sold as based on a true story, I didn’t figure out it was fiction until weeks later.

I wish she would buy that one back, LOL.

I kind of figured out how bad her recommended books were also. I read several, but they are usually the most depressing books around. I was relieved when she started doing clasics instead. She is now back to bad recommendations. She has too much power IMHO!

I agree, Oprah has a lot of power and seems to influence a great many people. Remember a few years back when she told her audience she would no longer eat beef because of the risk of mad cow disease?? She was sued by people in the beef industry because they said their sales dropped because of her comment. It just goes to show how much power the woman has. What scares me is that she is into all this New Age spirituality stuff, and I’m sure that the recent popularity of the New Age movement has a lot to do with Oprah. I know firsthand how much influence Oprah has–a relative of mine seems to take everything she says as gospel. If Oprah says it, then it must be true. Watch an episode of hers sometime and see what I mean. Notice how the audience seems to nod their heads in agreement to anything and everything Oprah says. If Oprah likes something, the audience shows their approval by cheering and going crazy. One time she had her make-up artist on the show, who she is obviously crazy about, and when she introduced him to the audience they got so excited and screamed and cheered as if they were losing their minds. If Oprah is disapproving of something, the audience also follows suit. I just think it is frightening how she is able to influence so many people. If she wanted to start a cult, she would have no problem getting followers. OK, I will get off my Oprah rant for now.

Asella I have notice this too. They are like zoombies “Yes Oprah,:yup: No Oprah:nope:” We follow all you say Oprah:bowdown: It is scary when you think about it.

I can see it now - a new doctrine arrises to form a new religion.

“Sola Oprah”

She must be a prophet. Some people treat her like one.

I told a friend recently about my “new age” concerns with Oprah, and she was shocked that I even said it. I think this is happening right out in the open and she is influencing some very unsuspecting people.

What it is really, is that we should not worship any TV personality. We need to have our priorities right. God, family, etc. TV personalities should never even be on our priority list.

Oprah was duped with this book, but I feel she had duped many people with her “new age” nonsense.

I would not joke about the Oprah religion, there is stunning precedence from the likes of Mohammed, Joseph Smith, David Koresh, L. Ron Hubbard, and Li Hongzhi. With the exception of Koresh, all of these demigods’ new faiths have demonstrated remarkable staying power.

And if you read about their lives, they all reach the point of madness over their power and influence.

So of course she is mad enough to upbraid the author right on the TV.

(cause she’s crazy) :whacky:

I too have refused to read anything that has the “Oprah Book Club” or whatever it’s called. Even the classics. If it has a sticker or promoted by her I refuse. I have been anti-Oprah for many years. She truly strikes me as being insincere, and I can’t believe no one else sees this.**

I am one of the people who have sworn off Oprah. At one time I used to enjoy her show. When she first began her career, she was enjoyable. Now the manner in which her audience follows her everybit of advice frightens me.

Don’t discount a good classical novel simply because she recommends it. Doing so actually gives her more power then she deserves.
