I’ve been Catholic all my life, but now I feel I’m wavering.

I recently did some study into our history as Catholics, and found our Popes, men of God, to be the most evil men on earth. Does anyone else feel like this? They killed, stole, committed adultery, and the list goes on, how can this be?

Please help, what should I/we do about this?

Hi,

The Church readily admits that there have been some popes whowhere scoundrels. St. Peter, the first pope, denied Jesus three times. Jesus knew He would, but selected him to be the leader nonetheless. He came for sinners.

The fact that there have been some bad popes only underlines the divine nature of the Church. If it had only been human in origin, it would have collapsed long ago. But the glory of the Church lies in the fact that despite the existence of such men as popes, not one of them ever led the Church into error in what it taught.

I suggest that you read “Pope Fiction” by Patrick Madrid. It’s available through amazon.com.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
