Hi, everyone.

I just had a quick question about prayers while doing Way of the Cross.
Are these prayers different from church to church?

Or is there a designated prayer widely and commonly used
throughout the world?

Thank you in advance for your help.

It varies because there are different forms written by different people. Like this year we got a new Priest Administrator and he changed ours from one that I can’t remember the name of to one written by St. Alphonsus Ligouri. The names of The Stations of the Cross themselves, however, remain the same.

While I tend to prefer the traditional prayers written by St. Alphonsus Ligouri in “The Way of the Cross,” mentioned earlier, I have several others in my “prayer drawer” that I occasionally call on – one for seniors, one for peace and justice, one that focuses on Mary and others that I know are there but would have to dig a bit to figure out . . .

There are no official prayers for the Stations. The only requirement is that one pause at each station to meditate on the meaning of that station. With a crowd the requirement to move from station to station applies only to the celebrant and servers; everyone else stays put.

A lot of parishes use the Stations written by St. Alphonsus Liguori, as many have indicated. I prefer the ones written by Pope Benedict XVI. They really cut to the heart. Even though they are lengthy, they are beautiful. I only wish that my parish would use them They use the ones written by Venerable Pope John Paul II (wherein he changed things up a bit). I am not too fond of his version, although others may like them. To each his own, I suppose.

The Divine Mercy version of the Way of the Cross is particularly nice because of the direct link between the Salvation of souls as prayed for by followers of Divine Mercy and His death on the Cross.
" Oh blood and water which gushed forth from the heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us I trust in You "
