Can anyone suggest ways to make friends? I am not anti social or anything like that, I just seem to have a hard time connecting with people. I hate to admit it but I really only have 1 close friend and she and I really are not that close anymore (she got married and I have an almost 4 year old). So any suggestions would be welcome thanks.

what are your interests? what are your favorite movies? books? sports? Do you have clubs at your parish you can join?

When I moved to Modesto 14 years ago I was only 6 years sober and knew NO one outside of my family. I had been taught well in my 12 step group, however, and made myself join an apostolate at my parish. I had to make myself to it because I am so afraid of people. I was taught to join a group and then put out my hand, introduce myself and ask the all important question:

“How can I help?”

YOU CAN DO IT

I think it’s hard to make friends nowadays. It’s important to make true friendship with people who share or at least respect our values.

And sometimes, there isn’t really much someone can do about it.

Sometimes, I believe true friendship is a matter of divine intervention.

We just have to keep trying to do things right and hoping and knowing that God will take care of our needs.

PS: Children are just so amazing. I am not sure I can ever be bored or worried when a child is around. 🙂

This may not be helpful for you, but I find that I really need outside structured time to keep up with people. I don’t remember to call, then feel embarassed to admit that I forgot, and then suddenly I haven’t seen a person in months (or years!) even I really got on well with them. I find that if I have a regular time I see someone, especially if it’s associated with some kind of group, that it really helps me keep up friendships. When I was in college, this was my sorority and other interest groups. The outside “pressure” (aka I wasn’t in charge of scheduling the meetings, but was told when they were) was really helpful for me. I just had to show up. 😉

Since graduation it has been a lot harder, especially with my own little guy and not many other friends who had babies (so Friday night bar crawls just weren’t going to happen:p). Maybe you could check out a site like Meetup? You can find groups with similar interests and then events are already scheduled - you just go when you can! I found a great Catholic moms group for my area. You can also get involved in a ministry with your parish that fits your scheduling needs.

So if you’re the type of person who, once in a social situation, can say hi and get to know people, but have no idea how to get to said situation or what to do after, maybe this will be helpful for you!

I’ve asked this question frequently and can share what I’ve learned:

Sometimes people are friendly and connect easily and ask about making friends because they just need ideas of what to do and where to go or maybe haven’t adjusted to how few and far between the experience of meeting someone new is – after your mid-twenties .

But you seem to be saying you have some trouble connecting. It would help you to know and address your reason for that difficulty. You might already have some ideas, for example, you get too nervous and self-conscious to interact with people, or you don’t know what to do where the people there could become friends.

One of the most enlightening responses for me is to consider that there are many types of friends. Some, you just meet for coffee; others you visit their homes; still others, you feel close to but only contact once in awhile. When you view it that way, perhaps you have more friends than you realize.

Now, maybe you mean you want a confidant, and the type of friend where you could call each other in the middle of the night. Well, most people would say those are just few and far between and also, don’t let go of your old friend because you might still recover some closeness.

You can learn to make a transition from people you just say “hi” too, to coffee friends, to closer friends. This was new to me and I read about making sure if you have a casual conversation you introduce yourself. If you want to take it another step, offer an invitation - to coffee, etc. I’m thinking if you have a 4 yr old daughter, you have a few choices – parents of other children her age who might meet for outings or socializing, church activities, and if you find the options are few, then starting something for parents either at her school or church.

I find when i run into roadblocks, the priests always have useful, helpful information that is specific to that community and congregation.

Thank you all for your suggestions and replies so far. As far as my interests go: my primary interests are my horses, horseback riding, and showing horses. I also in enjoy some light gamming and when I get the time to read I like vampire books ( “Interview with a Vampire” is my favorite) and historical fiction books. As for movies I tend to watch comedies and disney flicks.

I will admit that I can be kind of shy sometimes, but I am a very friendly person once I open up and get comfortable. Part of the reason I would like to expand my circle a little is because I would l like to make friends with other moms who have children my daughters age, but also have some single friends for when I need some “alone” time (which currently does not exist).

Have you tried reading time for toddlers at your local library? I see a lot of moms talking to each other there as little ones are listening to the librarian read them a story or if they watch a little puppet show. You can meet some other mom’s there, some may even be single moms as well. I think you said you were a single mom, if not please forgive me.

Also you said horseriding is an interest of yours. Does the place you have your horse, offer riding lessons to kids? That is a great place, the barn, to meet other moms who have their kids taking lessons. You don’t have to be the teacher giving the lessons, just hang out around the barn. I know my daughter made friends with this single woman who had a beautiful horse. In fact, she knew most of the kids who took lessons at that barn because she was there so much. I knew her as well. So the barn is a great place to meet someone. As someone else said, be a friend and soon you will have friends.

Those are just two ideas I had from what you wrote. I hope it helps.😉

Yes - be interested in other people, and ask them about themselves. Forget about yourself for a while and be fascinated with everything that they have to say to you, and be interested in what interests them. I don’t mean faking it; I mean, really be interested, and really want to know. Mention things that you like about them - even the ugliest person has a charming smile, so there is always something to compliment.

That’s how you make friends. 🙂

Exactly. Her interests do not at all match mine for instance. But if I meet someone who likes horses like her for instance, I would try to show interest and learn about horses…

So it’s just a matter of being open-minded.

I love horses from afar, lol (biiig racing fan).

‘how to Win Friends and Influence People’ by Andrew Carnegie is the best book i ever read about how to do the former and make yourself comfortable in any situaiton. I read it whenever I need a boost.

Good luck!

I really like nana’s idea!!

Does your daughter go to preschool? In my own experience, school was where we made GREAT adult friends!! Don’t limit yourself to only the parents of your daughter’s close friends… just spark up conversations with the other parents - regardless of whether their kids are close to your daughter. Our best friends have kids in different grades than our own, but they all still enjoy spending time together when we get together!

Think outside the box! Maybe offer group riding lessons or something? Post a flyer at the school…

OOOO I like Nana’s idea TOO…and I was thinking…is there an organization near you that takes disabled kids for rides on horses?
