We are in charge of our lives?

Why do people believe that they are in charge of their lives and not God? I have read a few books on organization to help me be more alert at work, and then I read a book about how to put first things first to be successful in life. I started working on this and then realized that yes, you can be successful in what you practice as long as you put that one thing first all the time. I threw that book away because I was getting out of hand trying to be organized at work without putting God first. Where did this notion of being in control of our lives come from and when did it get started?

It’s the concept of Free Will. God gave us the ability to discern His will and freely chose it.

The effect of original sin is that sometimes we disobey God and chose something that appears to be good but is evil (that’s called sinning).

We have to “fight the good fight” as St. Paul says. God helps and supports us, but He does not drag us into heaven.

St. Augustine said: “Work as if everything depended on you, but pray knowing everything depends on God”.
