I heard a co-worker say that we don’t need religion because it is man made. It’s our relationship with God that counts! I never heard that one before. My co-worker who made this statement belongs to an Assemblies of God church - is that not a religion? I should’ve asked her since you don’t do “religions” I’ll expect to see you in my church on Sunday.
What do you say to people who say this? I never heard it before.

Do they believe in Jesus? If so, point out Jesus was a devout Jew.

If not, then its a bit more complex of a conversation. I usually point out the following:

Imagine for one moment that all that matters is my relationship with God. Which also includes your relationship with God. And that other guys relationship with God. Assuming we all develop a good relationship with God, and then we all come to know this one God personally, and interact with him in the same way… by geese, we’ve just invented a religion!

There is one religion that is not man made. It is the religion of those who have a true, personal relationship with God. The ones who truly know him as a friend, so can introduce him to other people. Now it comes down to a matter of finding what group of people truly know God and which don’t…

Josh

Have your friend read these scriptures:

1 Timothy 5:4
But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God.

James 1:26-28
If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world

Notice that neither Paul nor James denigrate religion and that religion is something positive that one does.

Tell this guy to look up “religion” in a dictionary.

I belong to a protestant forum too and I remember one person saying the same thing. “I don’t follow a religion, I follow Jesus.” Its hard to debate somthing when that is their only reasoning.

one definition of religion is the relationship between God and man which renders to God all that is due to Him in justice, all honor, praise and glory and all acknowledgement by man of his profound debt to God. To profess belief in God, belief in Jesus Christ and acceptance of His teachings, yet to deny the necessity of giving oneself to Him, conforming one’s will, mind and heart to His, is absurd, yet that is the essence of religion.
