Another idea would be to contact any veterinary clinics or dog groomers to let them know your situation and your hope to adopt a dog. They may have clients who cannot keep a dog any longer and are looking for a good home for them. Additionally, you most likely will have a history of the dog available.

Personally, the cocker spaniel that now owns me is one that I found on the commuter train on my way home.

We actually thought about that, but they do backround checks and stuff. If they weren’t going to let us adopt a dog, my MIL was going to go adopt it for us.

Check out your local Petsmart. Most of them partenr with themlocal shelters and adopt out pets as well.

If you know the kind of dog you want, contact the breed rescue for that breed. The AKC website should be able to put you in touch with a rescue. My parent club rescues dogs all the time, puts them in homes with club members until they can be evaluated as to health and temperament, they are spayed or neutered and then put in a forever home. Most breeds have contact people all over the country.
