Hello,

I’ve always attended the Mass in English and would like to visit a parish in my diocese that has TLM. I drove by there when Mass had ended a few weeks ago and parked across the street to see what kind of attire was appropriate/expected, I saw women in dress slacks and nice blouses, jean skirts and sweaters, and all kinds of dresses, even one I would call a “Mother of the Bride” dresses (complete with a big “Princess Diana” hat). All the women, regardless if they had pants, skirts, or dresses, had head coverings on. Some had lacy doily things on the top of their heads, some had long veils (like 1st Communion) and some almost gypsy bandannas. If it’s expected to wear headcoverings, I certainly want to comply (or not stick out). Would it be okay to wear a simple brimmed “garden” hat that matched my clothes? I’m not comfortable with those lacy things and I cannot pull off the “bohemian” look with a denim skirt and bandanna. The only head covering I have is that hat (excluding winter blizzard gear. Is that okay? Any thoughts?

Yes, a hat is appropriate. The prime consideration for “proper dress” is modesty. This applies to both women and men. Traditionally, women wore a head covering and men do not.

To explain the reasons for “covering” I would refer you to a booklet published in 2005 by Requiem Press, entitled “The Chapel Veil”. It sells for about $3.25 and can be ordered at www.requiempress.com . Easy read and only 23 pages long.

God Bless

Thank you, both for your answer and for the link.
