I’m sorry to say I’ve not been attending mass as I’ve been put off having to wear a mask. I know there is no excuse, but I am really against wearing one in Mass in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. I can understand not offering peace of our Lord and sitting close to one another, but I believe this goes to far. I feel very guilty now and want to attend mass again. Does anyone else feel this way?

Does thinking of wearing a mask during Mass as an act in the interests of the common good help? Jesus would certainly want us to act in the interests of the common good and over and above our own interests even our own most admirable spiritual interests.
Therefore, wearing a mask during Mass is an act of obedience to Jesus.

Secular (and religious) authority ask us to wear masks in the interest of our own and the common good.
If obedience to legitimate authority causes personal suffering, it can be united to The Cross.

Romans Chapter 13 Let every person be subordinate to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been established by God.

Also Catholic Catechism #1900

I dont know about your immediate area, but there are plenty of parishes where not wearing one is accepted. Especially among the more traditional/conservative ones.

I was just speaking to the Bishop’s Office in my Diocese and we were lamenting the lack of Mass. Prayers for its resumption are prime place now We have not been to Mass for a very long time, and still cannot worship at Mass, its illegal. Everyone here will be at Mass with bells on and masks as soon as we are legally able to.

Wearing a mask will be a very insignificant detail, but essential, like wearing other clothing.

There’s nothing in Canon Law that says we can’t wear a mask, is there? So it’s not wrong to wear a mask. It’s not comfortable. It’s not ideal. But it’s better than having to miss out altogether, no? It’s also humbling, doing something we’d rather not do just to be with Our Lord. We have a dispensation where we are so we don’t HAVE to attend Mass and people who are at high risk for getting a serious case of COVID are told that they should stay home…they don’t HAVE to stay home but are told they should. Pray about it. Ask Jesus what He wants you to do.

I don’t wear one to mass, just go and don’t wear one. Jesus wants you there at Mass more than anything. If that specific church or priest wont let you go to church because you aren’t wearing one then find a different parish if possible.

Even if there were a prohibition in Canon Law, the Pope, being Supreme Legislator could and most likely would change any such Canon Law in the face of the pandemic.

What exactly is your issue with the mask? If it’s uncomfortable you could buy one with a more comfortable material. I personally prefer the disposable masks than cotton but some of my friends use a silky/satin type of mask and they find it comfortable.

As you already know, wearing a mask does not disrespect God at all.

I wear mask because I want to protect the people around me in case I am sick. I can’t risk causing people to be sick.

They can do that? Kind of a papal executive order?
The Pope can change Canon Law. He is the Supreme Legislator. Bear in mind, if a thing is Divine law, it cannot be changed, If a thing is human law, then it can. One example of that is the new study into the female Diaconate. If it were found there was a precedent in the early church and the Council of Chalcedon was describing the laying on of hands on female deacons as a form of ordination, and that the subsequent disappearance of female deacons was due to a human type law, then the Pope could change Canon Law with respect to female deacons.

The Pope opened a new study into female deacons in April this year at the request of those at the Amazonian Synod last year. There have been a few studies into the female diaconate in the 21st Century.

Gotcha. And I can rest easy because I know the Holy Spirit will not allow error to be taught. 🙂 But, isn’t the teaching authority of the Church the Pope in union with bishops? Doesn’t that constitute the Magesterium?

Exactly 🙂

I see you added

Only the Pope alone is the Supreme Legislator. He is the Vicar of Christ on earth and the head of the Church. He is the referee, if you like. He can choose to consult, and he can choose to go it alone as far as this goes.
I am trying to find you a good easy link on this 🙂
