Wearing Hats During Mass?

At our parish there are women who wear fancy hats all during Mass. One of them also reads the Old Testament reading, in her hat. Is this acceptable?
 
Yes as to wearing hats, that is perfectly fine. I think it is as well for the reading, although check with someone else on that.
 
I dont’ understand why it wouldn’t be accetpable, sicne Vatican II did not forbid women form the prior pratice of covering their heads. When we were little (which was way after Vatican II) my mother use to buy us and herself hats for Easter Sunday and we worse them throughout the service. We knew the preists and the nuns very well at the church and they certainly would have told us if it were an offense.
 
This is something of a matter of culture, but not entirely. Until relatively recently (couple of decades ago) women weren’t allowed to enter church unless they had their heads covered. Men of course, always removed their hat when entering church. As fashion and culture changed, this went from veils, to hats, and finally to the bare heads we women have now in many churches. There is nothing “wrong” with a woman wearing a hat today if she chooses. It is more a matter of preference now than anything else, but if you search the threads for the subject of viels or mantillas, you’ll see tons of stuff from people who want to bring the old practices back.
 
My grandmaw was from kentucky and she would be rolling over in her grave if she knew I was going to church not only without a hat, but with no gloves and (gasp) sometimes wearing slacks.

Hats are the normal headgear for women in this country at Church, Used to be required, when hats went out of fashion many women who feel more reverent with a head covering when to veils (easily carried in a purse). Veils were always more used in Hispanic countries. There is no longer a requirement for women to cover their heads in church, but it is not forbidden. hats and veils are both okay. Men however, even in Texas, must take of their hats in Church.

speaking of which, at the pro-life Mass at the Basilica yesterday the Knights of Columbus in full regalia were the honor guard for the Eucharistic procession and at Mass, and doffed their hats until reposition of the blessed sacrament, but wore them during Mass, except during the consecration. can someone explain this?

From an old military man…

From a ceremonial aspects, the Knights are considered “under arms” since they are an honor guard and often carry swords, etc. Military tradition is that those in uniform under arms do not doff their hats. Note that any Swiss guards that are present at papal Masses keep their helmets on.
 
Thanks! I can understand the veils, but I just wasn’t sure of the hats I was seeing. Big purple ones, flowery ones. Not the traditional “Easter bonnet”.

I was always raised that when we pray, we remove our hats, just as we remove them to sing the National Anthem.

That has never been the custom for women.

And I have sadly accepted the modern reality that gloves are no longer alway worn. I’m not happy with it, but we all have our crosses to bear.

thanks I figured it had something to do with being “in uniform”
 
Yes it is acceptable for a woman to wear a hat to Church. I have been doing that for several years. In fact I was encouraged by one of the priests in my parish to go ahead and wear my hat - long story - he was saying in order to set a trend and I was saying no because I did not want to start a trend.

When I was a younger woman I wore a hat to Church and then things changed. I admit that I did feel funny not wearing a hat.

Yes I am a lector and I wear my hat when I am being the Lector. No one has ever complained about me wearing my hat. Occasionally, I see other women wearing their hats, but it is quite a rare event.

I was never taught to remove my hat when praying. In fact at school we had to put on our hats when we attended Mass.
