What is your view of the acceptability of wearing jeans in church, to Sunday Mass, in particular?

I think the prejudice against jeans is silly, especially since many jeans cost more than what you might call proper clothing for church.

When you vote on the poll, remember we’re talking about the whole world, not just the U.S.

Depends on which church I go to. If I go to mass on a college campus then I’ll wear jeans but if it’s an “adult” church I’l try to wear something more dressy. If I do wear jeans at an “adult” church I’ll sit in the back. All in all I don’t see a problem with it. If they’re nice pants with no rips or stains then it’s fine with me.

Hello

I honestly think so long as we look presentable in Church, wearing jeans is not really a big issue. The point in going to church is praying and worshipping God.

God Bless
Saint Andrew.

Decent fitting jeans that are not badly faded? I think that’s fine. These baggy things I see teenagers wearing, that look like they would better fit the back side of a moose? Bad idea anywhere, but esp. in Mass.

There is nothing “wrong” with wearing jeans to church. What you loose is the power of the symbolic action of looking your best while doing the most important thing in your life … worshipping God.

If you were invited to a state dinner at the White House, would you wear jeans? Not bloodly likely. Mass is far more important than that . Dress up to honor God.

Depends on where you are. I have a house in a rural town where clean jeans and a baseball cap are considered dressy.

At St. Vincent Ferrer on Lexington Avenue in Manhattan that woudn’t fly. :nope: It’s more cultural than religious, and as much class related as cultural. There is a spectrum of what is considered respectful/disrespectful.

Me? I’m a card-carrying fuddy-duddy. I don’t even own a pair of jeans.

I live in Las Vegas. I’m not wearing a suit and tie to Mass, it’s far too hot, hot enough to make you ill, even more so if you were wearing heavy clothes. It’s hot enough under a choir robe, which I think our director is thinking of getting rid of. I don’t think God is asking that of anyone.

The poll?, looks like you had a falling out with it, cause it aint here!

Jeans are fine, imo, i think Jesus cares more about your inside than the outside, no?

Having just spent a month out in the extreme wilderness (no facilities for 50 miles except the time-honored “behind the bush”), I can state that I am very glad that nobody at the church I went to objected to my attire. I usually appeared in jeans, sun shirt, and dusty hiking boots. The Boss-man didn’t want me to take time off from work to go to church, but under the interference with religion laws, all he could do was tell me not to take too long about it. So I had to arrive in full field kit (sheath knife included!). Thankfully, the church welcomed me as I came. I am seriously glad for that.

JKirkLVNV. These baggy things I see teenagers wearing said:
😃 :rotfl: I think a moose might not even wear some of them:rotfl: But seriously, Jeans provided they are of a decent cut, not to tight or loose, not rippped or too faded are OK.

If fact jeans are not an issue, I live on the Jersey Shore and our problem is “beach clothes” being worn to Church.(usually out of towners, but some locals to it to) Tube tops, short-shorts, boys wearing t-shirts, flip-flops and bathing trunks as shorts. One woman at least 30, she had a couple of children too was dressed in her bathing suit with a “wrap skirt”

I agree that jeans that are not tattered looking are acceptable. Darker jeans look dressier than the standard blue jeans. Some kahki jeans are nice looking.

The more important part, to me, is the shirt: Wearing a T-shirt with the jeans is completely different from wearing a dress shirt (with or without the tie).

I would agree with prior commentators that what bugs me more is the T-shirts (sometimes tank tops!) and shorts.

Still, it is best to dress up. I believe it shows respect to God and our Faith.

Wear what you want, do you really need someone to tell you what to wear to church? I tell my kids what to wear but as an adult, I get to choose, that is a bonus to being an adult.
This topic has been hashed and rehashed on Catholic answers in the past, always the same, always differing opinions.
If your really concerned ask your parish priest what he would like to see the congregation wearing and then you’ve got your answer 👍

Would you be embarrassed if Jesus saw what you were wearing? Because at church Jesus is up on the altar. Jesus is in your hands. Jesus is in your mouth.

1 Peter 3:3-4

3
Whose adorning let it not be the outward plaiting of the hair, or the wearing of gold, or the putting on of apparel: 4 But the hidden man of the heart in the incorruptibility of a quiet and a meek spirit, which is rich in the sight of God.

Jeremiah 4:30

You now who are doomed, what do you mean by putting on purple, bedecking yourself with gold, Shading your eyes with cosmetics, beautifying yourself in vain?

Deuteronomy 22:5

A woman shall not wear an article proper to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s dress; for anyone who does such things is an abomination to the LORD, your God.

Matthew 6:25

"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat (or drink), or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

1 Timothy 2:9

Similarly, (too,) women should adorn themselves with proper conduct, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hairstyles and gold ornaments, or pearls, or expensive clothes, but rather, as befits women who profess reverence for God, with good deeds.

Romans 13:14

Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

Revelatioin 16:15

“Behold, I am coming like a thief.” 7 Blessed is the one who watches and keeps his clothes ready, so that he may not go naked and people see him exposed.

Clearly, there is nothing immoral with wearing jeans to Church. However, I would say that in our culture jeans are too casual for Mass. In current society, commonly accepted business attire does not include jeans. You don’t show up in a business environment in jeans. You don’t go to a dinner party in jeans. You probably shouldn’t wear your jeans to Mass either. One’s attire at Mass should be a notch above the attire worn to mow the lawn or attend a baseball game.

I am a very casual dresser, and I love the comfort of jeans, and other casual clothing. That said, I always wore them to Mass until I became an Extraordinary Minister and I would often find myself being asked to come up if someone was missing, etc. At that point, my eyes were opened to proper attire for Mass, since I was extremely embarrassed to be caught “unable” to serve because my clothing was not appropriate. I began to feel that if I wasn’t appropriate for the altar, what made me think I was dressed appropriate for my visit with the Lord? These days, I mostly dress up, although there are times, and circumstances, where I am more casual.
PS I never wear nor wore anything vulgar, and seeing this at Mass makes me very sad. I cannot believe the ignorance of those who wear these clothes out in society and, particularly, at Mass. I can’t help but to think that if a person is that oblivious to their attire, how in tune could they be to what is happening at Mass? Surely an heart open to God would realize the flaw in such choices.

I agree… I like to dress up a little( wear a skirt) to Mass because it sets it apart from every other thing I do in my life. I am a pretty casual person, but I feel like it is important to “dress up” a little. That is just my personal opinion… And I also think if people want to wear jeans, that’s toatally fine as long as they are apropriate(not too tight/loose and no holes). And I think that people should also remain modest.

Jesus hung on the cross for three hours for you. One hour of being hot is too much of a sacrifice?

When they’d have to carry people to the hospital after Mass, Sunday after Sunday, from June to late September? We can’t let our children in year round schools play outside, that’s how punishing the heat is here. I don’t think Our Lord is asking that of us. Dressing nicely doesn’t have to mean a suit and tie. Plus, I usually have on a choir robe. The emphasis should be on modesty, which I am in my dress. Thanks for the pharisaical tone of voice, though. You got your “piety points” for the day. Remember to wave to us lowlifes when you’re sitting at the Right Hand someday.
