I was wondering, are there any Catholic websites or such that a webmaster can use as guidelines to ensure his/her site is a family-friendly site?

That wasn’t very helpful. Why do you think we have the Bible and the Church? What if God told us to “just use common sense”.

sheesh

In this case I have to agree with Benedictus. Common sense such as, don’t link to questionable material, don’t include information unsuitable for young readers, etc. What more did you have in mind? There isn’t exactly an “official Catholic way to make a website”.

I don’t want to be “official Catholic website”. Rather I don’t know how you would go about handling a forum. Do you censor words like gay, Jesus Christ ect? What is appropriate and not appropriate to have when concerning children? I can follow my own common sense, however I don’t always know the right thing to do. I want to make sure it is family friendly, while at the same time not being too restrictive.

Ok, that’s a little more specific. The key to a good forum is MODERATORS. You can censor words that would be considered profanity (the C-word, S-word, etc), but you’ll never keep it all contained. Forums must be monitored actively by humans so that offensive posts may be removed and threads deleted.

Thank you. I do have moderators that do a nice job. There is another Administrator on my site that really helps alot.

www.catholicculture.org does Catholic website reviews.

I was wondering if someone was going to mention that accursed site. Who died and made them Pope? They have some really wacky ways of determining what sites are and are not faithful to the Church.

It’s not so much that I dislike their reviews (which I do), but that they implictly claim for themselves an authority they don’t have.

I think it is a VERY good question and I can understand how “common sense”, while true, is a frustrating answer. As a parent, I would like to be able to do a quick search and determine who is running, benefitting from and determining the content of any given site. One thing I’d suggest is simply having a homepage that reassures and makes a clear statement what your own morale stance is. Your own background and the background of your moderators is really nice to see.
In finding out your own personal system, I’d suggest you ask the moderators of this site what they find unacceptable in a children’s and/or family friendly site. I think you can drop a note to them, can’t you? (I haven’t done it before.)
btw, I responded to you on the “neopets” thread. We checked out your site and like it very much. Only suggestion is a parents page and homepage with a bit more information.
I also wonder about some of the names: purely-evil being one.

Thank you so much for taking the time to check it out. I also thank you kindly for your reply. I will definately do a hompage of sorts.

As for the moderator named “Purely-Evil”, I think he may have mentioned before where his user name came from though I can’t recall at this moment (that’s a good idea for the homepage…where they got their username!). He’s a nice person though, I’ll have to ask him the origin of his name though. I am also working on a new design that will be much more lighter and friendlier. I am not happy with the design we have now because it’s too standard and is kinda dark (as in color).

I thank you very much again for your help!

I would say try to reflect the Catholic spirit and concentrate on the yes’s rather than on the no-no’s. Again, some no-no’s are adamant. Not saying it’s a good thing to squelch every voice saying that artificial contraception isn’t so evil or whatever, but all the militant pro-choice **** I would keep out of the site unless people are being polite and the debate is a debate and not a pro-choice feast.

Next, I would mind the sexual content, from porn sites to even mild things. There’s no harm in admitting that we’re all humans and attraction is a factor and I guess there’s no problem with people touching on the subject while still keeping it clean, but it’s not like you need a wet t-shirt contest discussion on your site, is it?

So if you keep it decent and reasonable, there shouldn’t be too much of a trouble that you can possibly avoid. There is some trouble you can’t avoid, but life’s tough.
