The Gospel of John 2:6 says, “Now six stone jars were standing there, for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.” What is the rite of purification described in this verse?

I believe it refers to the purification bathing the married couple do before consumation of marriage.

Was that what you meant or

You might want to see if StillSmallVoice, a practicing Orthodox Jew, can give an answer on this one.

Here’s something I found:

“The stone jars Jesus has filled with water are called baptismoi and were used for ritual washings in Judaism. Numbers 19:11-22 details their various uses.”

Weren’t they for the use of washing peoples hands and feet when they entered a building? I thought it included a ritualistic prayer.
