Hi,
I converted as Christian in foreign country, during baptism added Christian name along with my original name. The priest gave me a letter also.

I approached nearby church in India for marriage. The priest says my name in baptism certificate and original name is different. Expecting both the name to be same. Do I need to change my name in gazette as in baptism certificate? Is it normal in all Catholic Church? Please advise

I would suggest asking the Catholic priest what you need to do in this case, given that you have explained to him you took an additional name at Baptism and you also have a letter from the priest who baptized you.

It is not clear from your post if the priest needs you to change your name or if he needs some other form of proof that it was really you who were baptized and not someone else.

Priest says my name to be according to government records. It can be two things either change my baptism name to remove my Christian name or change government record according to baptism name.

It sounds like this is what is required in your diocese then and you would have to do what the priest says.

I am not aware of this issue coming up in USA, but I can see it coming up in a country where perhaps the records have not been very well kept in the past, or where there is a government or diocese requirement for exact matching of names.

Don’t remove your Christian name. That is how God knows by now. It is very important for a Christian. Change the government record instead if you have that option.

Another “talk to priest”.

This sounds like the secular requirements—that he can’t issue a government certificate for Able Baker Smith that reads “Able Baker Charlie Smith” . . . .
