Weed or Seed

Have you ever considered yourself as weed or as a seed? In the parable of the weeds in the field, Jesus uses this analogy to explain how it will be at the end of the age. Jesus explains the parable this way, “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the Kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angles. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his Kingdom all who causes others to sin and all evildoers. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of the Father.” Have you ever considered yourself to be a weed or a seed? Can a weed ever be transformed from something that chokes out and destroys life and growth, or has it been doomed from its beginning? I wonder.

Whereas we usually think of the “weeds” as being external agents of the devil, the reality is that we often carry weeds within us, and they are necessary for the growth of the seed within us. An awareness of our own inadequacies for example is also one method of nurturing humility.

Paul bemoaned the “the thorn in the flesh”, a messenger of Satan, which he expressly stated was to stop him being puffed up with pride over the tremendous experiences and knowledge he had been granted. He was definitely a “Seed” but he carried within him a “Weed”.
