I try to visit the Blessed Sacrament at least twice a week.

Today the Adoration Chapel at my parish was being used for some prayer meeting so I went to a neighboring parish which keeps its church open for prayer and adoration throughout the day.

About twenty minutes into my prayer, the parish janitor and handyman come in with an extremely tall ladder and start replacing the spotlights on the altar. The handyman climbed the ladder and the janitor held it. The ladder was extremely rickety.

The following occurred in Spanish.

HANDYMAN: Hold the ladder.
JANITOR: I am.
HANDYMAN: Ah. Ah. You need to hold it straight.
JANITOR: I am.
HANDYMAN: No you’re not.

ME (to my son): Of all the most distracting things to do, they had to pick the scariest.

ME (To God): Please don’t let that guy die while I am here. Please keep him safe.

They went though this twice more as they changed three spot lights. Then they turned on the lights and only one went on. The start shaking the three extra lights they had with them.

HANDYMAN: *No sirven * (English translation: They won’t work.)

At that point, we finished our holy half hour and left.

My son said that he was supposed to be praying in thanksgiving for a 3.85 freshman gpa, but instead he wound up praying for the handyman’s safety.

Same for me.

Hope the handyman is alright, and sorry about the distraction it caused you. But why couldn’t they wait until night to do this, after the chapel was closed?

Probably because they are home at night. Most church repairs and maintenance are done during the day.

Excellent story…wonderful example!!!
Sometimes, our prayers, without verbally being prayed, get answered by us praying for others - an act of charity.

Thank you for praying for the handyman and janitor. I just dread it when my husband has to climb those tall ladders to change lights in church. And I am usually the one holding the ladder.
