Last spring I was invited to go out with a group of neighbors to say goodby to a couple who where moving to another State. I was only casually aquainted with these neighbors(we went to dinner once and 2 times we attended there big summer party, the husband helped us with a computer conversion that my husband paid him very generously for, but that’s about it) I consider this couple aquaintences not friends with very little contact in the five years I’ve known them.

Anyway the morning of the goodbye dinner, I saw the husband waving to me as I drove by on my way to work. I waved but kept on going. That evening I met the couple with two neighbors I had never met before, at the door of the restaurant. The moving husband started to berrate me for not stopping to talk to him. The husband of the new couple actually had to make a light comment saying I was probably in my work zone and that’s how he gets when he’s going to work. I felt very embarrassed to be spoken to like this in front of new aquaintences. The rest of the evening I was snubbed by the wife even when I tried to make polite conversation. At the end of the evening, we all went out of the restaurant, and a neighbor that I know casually asked me if I enjoyed the restaurant and we started to chat little. This was interrupted quickly when moving wife walks over and asks the neighbor I was talking with where she is parked. She answered and said she had to go right home, kissed her, wished her well and left. My turn now, moving wife total cold shouldered me. I wished her well gave her a hug (She was as stiff as a board) and quickly left.

End of story, No!
Moving couple are back for a visit with parents and want to get together again. I got this sweet message on my machine that they are gettiing together again with the same neighbors and would we join them.
If they were so irritated with me at the goodbye dinner that they couldn’t even be polite(and I’ve never recieved any calls or cards like here’s where we moved) why would they even include me again? And why are they pretending that we are good friends ? The answering machine message sounded so sickingly sweet. Do they sound like Bullies or are people just that crazy?confused:

They sound a little nuts. What I would do is just politely say, “I’m so sorry that we won’t be able to meet. We have _____ going on that night.”

Wow. Talk about overreacting! Maybe they were very sensitive because they were moving soon and felt like you didn’t look “sad” enough, but it was still rude and childish to treat you like that. Perhaps they considered you like more than an acquaintance and were disappointed, but considering what little contact you had with them in 5 years, they shouldn’t be surprised.

As for the new, sweet message, I think that they might feel bad for how they treated you and are trying to make it up to you. Since they live in another state now, they probably don’t want to waste whatever time they’re spending in your state holding grudges, and they probably want to make the most out of it with their old neighbors 👍

It’s just hard to want to be friendly with people who would act like that. I just found myself not liking them enough(just listening to the dinner conversation) to want any further contact. I’m just willing to live and let live. The few times I ever spoke with them they always where sure tell me about their plans to do this or that with this set of friends or that friends, kinda in a bragging way, so i don’t think they are hard up for friends other wise I would think they have poor social skills and cut them a break.Don’t get me wrong, I could always use a new friend but I don’t want to be abused.

I understand. I probably wouldn’t want to be friendly with them either after being treated like that.

I was just trying to understand why their behavior changed so drastically 😛

You are right, don’t waste your time with people who don’t give you the respect you deserve 👍

***“I’m sorry, but I’m going to be watching paint dry that night, but thanks for the invitation.”

No? Too rude? 😃

Ok, what nanny says. I would definitely not bother…I mean, it COULD be that the moving neighbor had a bad night–Sometimes, people just lack social skills…hard to say the reasons behind it…I HIGHLY doubt it was you, but I still would decline. Good luck!***

If it were me I would just say “no thanks”…You don’t owe them an explanation

They moved just in the nick of time! Lucky you! 👍

The older I get the less chance I give people to treat me badly a second time. Life is too short. Spend the time serving dinner to the homeless. Make your excuse count.

Thank you all 🙂 for your supportive replies. I will refuse the invite and I love the idea of using that evening to do something charitable for others. What a great idea! 👍

Good for you! No reason to give her a chance for a second performance.
