Hi guys, I just went to the doctor today because my cycles have been all crazy, and what he said was that he doesn’t think I’m ovulating anymore.

I said, that can’t be right because I’ve been using NFP and seen my temperatures spike every so often, and stay up for a while. He said normally that would mean you’re ovulating, but he doesn’t think I am.

I have one baby already, and she is about 14 months old, so we’ve been trying for the past few months to get pregnant again with no sucess. So maybe he’s right.

I’m feeling kinda sad about this…are there things that can be done to make you ovulate?

I’m so sorry. I don’t know any answers, as I’m not a medical person, but I do know that one of my friends took shots to help her ovulate. I have no idea if she was in the same situation as you. Perhaps you could get a second opinion from a fertility specialist? My prayers are with you and your husband.

There may be drugs that could help. Clomid, for instance, helps some people. Talk to your doctor or a fertility specialist to figure out what’s going on and determine what the options are.

I see you baby is just 14 months. Are you currently breastfeeding or did you stop in the last month or three? If so, you could still be in a period of (natural) breastfeeding induced infertility (with accompanying crazy cycles). It is your body’s way of saying it is not ready for the demands of both continued breastfeeding and another pregnancy.

Some of the things you’ve posted over the last few months have led me to wonder if you have low progesterone (which you have NO progesterone if you aren’t ovulating each month) or possibly poly-cystic ovarian syndrome.

Did you press your doctor for a causation behind the lack of ovulation?

If you are truly poly-cystic (he needs to run a full gamut of blood work on you!), some women are treated with metformin (if they have insulin resistance) and that many times has been known to regulate cycles and restore ovulation. Not for everyone, but many people.

Clomid is also an ovulation-inducer.

What did he say is your next step??? Don’t just accept this news and go home sad, please fight for proper medical treatment to get the result you seek: another baby! 🙂

Okay, well No, it isn’t because of breastfeeding, I had to stop that 10 months ago. He said that is plenty of time and my cycles should have gone back to normal a long time ago.

Yes, he did check me for ovarian cysts. I told him that I had had one in the past, and he checked to see if it was still there. However, he didn’t tell me whether it was or not, so I think it wasnt…but then again you can’t always tell by physical examination only without a CAT scan.

Yes, he is checking my hormone levels. I should get the lab results tommarow. In the meantime I’m to start taking prolactin to regulate my cycles. I do not think that is to make me ovulate though.

My doctor is Catholic…he’s pro-life as well. There is only one doctor in the area who is NFP only, but he’s downtown and I’d rather not go there - it’s dangerous!

If you’ve only been trying for 2 months I’d say give it more time than that before you start worrying too much. Maybe God has different plans for you at the moment.

2 months? Try eight. My brother and I are 11 months apart, and my mom always reccomended it. I had hoped my babies would be close togethor as well.

Oh, I see in your first post you said few not sure why I took that as 2 but I didn’t think it was as long as 8.

It took my wife and I about 14 months of trying to conceive our second child. At the 12 month mark we had all sorts of tests done. After the tests we decided just to let it go and not dwell on it anymore and leave it up to God. The 2 months after that were much easier and we were blessed enough to conceive. Funny thing with my story is 2 months after having our second child our third was conceived. We really weren’t expecting to have that one so soon, then again it just goes to show who is in control.

I know it can be very difficult to go through my advice would be to just accept it as Gods will and don’t dwell on it so much (I know that isn’t easy).

Ask about using Prometrium (sp?)

Also remember that in two perfectly healthy people trying to conceive, it is still only a 25% chance possibility! Sometimes it simply takes time. 🙂

(That fact is from CCLI, by the way.)

My wife had crazy cycles for over a year after the intial return. Even with the crazy cycles we got prenant when our second was 24 months. Don’t jump to conclusions and don’t be too impartient. Sometimes it takes time. Take that rather as a possible sign that a little more space is needed between your 1st and 2nd.

He doesn’t think you’re ovulating??? He didn’t check??

How about an ultrasound to see what’s going on? When I was going through infertility hell I had so many ultrasounds I thought they were going to put me on the payroll at the OB/Gyn’s! They can see the pre-ovulation cysts on ultrasound. I’m not sure if they can see the actual egg inside.

I don’t like this doctor. I’m for a second opinion. Maybe someone who knows what he is talking about!
As for crazy cycles, there can be many causes.

Good luck!

My husband and I having been trying for going on 15 months now…I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, which is a problem normally diagnosed by visualizing mutiple cysts on the ovaries, and no menstration…also there is an excess of male hormones in the body, and typically the woman is insulin resistant and overweight…

My doctor just put me on Provera (progesterone) to force a cycle and metformin (also called glucophage) to tame the insulin resistance…I feel a lot better already (I actually have energy to do things) and it should help me lose some of the weight that I’ve been trying to lose for years now…by losing that weight and getting the insulin levels under control I should see a restoration of my cycles and ovulation…

Realistically, only approximately 10% of the population is actually “infertile” meaning that it is impossible for them to concieve…I highly doubt that you would fall into that category, as you’ve already had one child…it sounds like there are some obstacles standing in your way, but those obstacles can be removed once it is determined what they really are…

If you feel distressed about it all, don’t forget to take it to God in Prayer… I do this quite often…and I also ask St. Anne to pray for me…I’m learning exactly how important prayer is because of all of this, and it has helped me immensly…

much love,
Jamie

Don’t give up hope!!! After I had my first child, like you, I wanted another one right away. YEARS went by - I charted - I planned - we followed a “schedule” every single month for two years and nothing happened. I finally went on clomid - my doctor kept increasing the dosage because he still felt I wasn’t ovulating. It was such a frustrating, depressing time. It seemed like EVERYONE I knew was preganant - I just cried all the time - joined an infertility support group & at only 28, tried to accept that I would only have 1 child. Looks pretty grim huh? Well as I type this I’m expecting my 5th child. I have no idea why - nor did my doctor why I went for almost 4 years without getting preganant and then boom boom boom boom with very little effort.

You could very well be in the same boat. My advice to you would be educate yourself - there’s a great book “How to get Preganant.” Seems obvious - but there are some great tips which may increase your odds. Also, press the doctor to do as much as possible. Although the clomid didn’t work for me… I know it did work for others. Last, trust that God knows the desires of your heart and only has the very best in store for your family. That is so much easier said than done, I know. But it’s so very true.

God Bless you,
CM

Thank you all. I am definately taking your advice to heart.

I think someone else posted this here but have you considered the Pope Paul VI Institute? I thin kthey’ll work with your dr. to get lab results and such that they’ll need to see if they can determine what’s happening.

After we lost our son (our first pregnancy), it took us almost 2 years to get pregnant again. I took my temperature every morning, charted the results, and had designated days when we would “try” Finally my doctor put me on Clomid because my ovulation was all over the place and the Clomid was supposed to make my ovulation more regulated and predictable. I took it for 4 months. And the fifth month I finally got pregant.

The funny thing is, more than 3 years later, we had a surprise pregnancy. Seems like the same wacky cycles that kept me from predicting ovulation to get pregnant also kept me from predicting ovulation to avoid it.

Trying unsuccessfuly to get pregant is a very hard road. For a long time it seemed like our only baby would be a dead one. During this time, an awesome Priest told me to pray to Saint Gerard, and gave me a medal and holy card. We see that Priest from time to time when he visits our parish, and my now 10 year old daughter knows that he is the Priest who helped me to pray for her to be born.

No one knows what God’s plan is for our lives. Perhaps there will be more babies for you, maybe all your love and parenting will be for your one daughter. But make sure you pursue all your options first, by finding the cause of your secondary infertility. It may be treatable.

I have much empathy for your situation Christian4Life. My dh and I have been married for 18 years----never having conceived. We have 3 great kids via adoption.

I just wanted to post a few thoughts. Infertility was (and sometimes is) the most painful thing I’ve had to endure in my life. When marrying, dh and I planned on having a big family. We have used NFP faithfully since being married, so we knew almost immediately that we had a problem. I remember thinking that my heart had a big black hole in it when the diagnosis of infertility came back. Our problem is severe—virtually no chance of conception. Since any infertility treatment available for our problem would entail going against Church teachings—we have not pursued much in the way of treatments.

The above being said, I must say that this suffering has given me a profound appreciation for the miracle of life. It takes my breath away to look at my children, and know that they came to us from God. It’s difficult to see others having child after child with virtually no appreciation of the wonderful GIFT they are receiving. I believe enduring this type of suffering has also brought me closer to God. It brings it home that I am not in control of things----God is. When there is simply nothing that can be done, except to pray, your heart is softened (or with some hardened)to the voice of God.

To second and third other posters, seek other treatment (within the realms of Church teaching). Do what you can to help yourself ovulate, and continue to use NFP. Cling to the hope that if God wants you to conceive more children, you will!!! Keep praying–perhaps God is allowing this suffering, so that you will turn to Him more fully.

Hope you don’t mind my rant. I will pray for you and for all infertile couples on this forum. Remember that God has particular compassion for those who suffer infertility—there are many stories in the bible of those who suffer in this way.
