Went to a steakhouse last Friday on a cruise

My wife had pre-booked a specialty restaurant ( which costs extra) months before the cruise and she’d forgotten that I am to abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent. She went to the same place on the same ship last year with her parents, had a full rack of BBQ ribs, and the ribs are to die for, and I was so looking forward to eating some. She swore she didn’t do it intentionally ( I believe her and know she didn’t do it intentionally, and she’s not Catholic), but anyway, could you believe that among all that temptation, and in the place of the ultimate place of temptation, a STEAKHOUSE restaurant, I held back and it wasn’t easy, and ate no beef? The entree, baked Chilean Sea Bass was delicious, I must say.

Good for you! I think a lot of people would have been looking for excuses or exceptions. You simply took responsibility for yourself and that’s rare.

Wasn’t easy for sure. And I didn’t include the three buffets that they had that day and everyday, loaded with meat products. My wife suggested that perhaps I could abstain from meat on another day as a substitute, but I regretfully said it doesn’t work that way. I’m bot bragging, for sure, as it took everything that I had not to order any meat. Much of my thinking also included that sure, eat steak, enjoy yourself, you’re on a cruise. And no meat whatsoever, with buffets several times a day, no ham, no bacon, no sausage, no chicken, no eggs, etc. That was nearly as tempting as not eating the steak that evening. Meat as far as the eye can see. 🤣 But you know what, I would have enjoyed eating the eating and consuming meat all that day, but instead I’d be feeling so much guilt now to whenever. But at least I did get to eat a steak, a few days before that Friday I did get to eat a delicious steak a an Italian restaurant. 😀

Yes, Latin Rite. Oops! Didn’t know about the eggs. And thanks for letting me know. I’ve been abstaining from eggs every Friday this Lent as well. Seriously, though, I rarely ate eggs on the cruise because they (scrambled) were so runny and not tasting so great.

One thing I just realized I might need to clarify: In some dioceses, this might actually be a requirement. You should check with your local conference of bishops and your diocese specifically.

Also, if you’re used to not eating eggs, it is certainly a laudable practice to continue.
