According to a couple different versions of the Bible I read Joseph and Mary were not married at the time Jesus was born. When they went to Bethlehem for tax registration it says that Joseph went with Mary his “espoused” wife being great with child. What is the interpretation on this?

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

That is the standard Protestant position, but Catholics east and west, Orthodox, and many Protestants, (Anglicans., and Lutherans) beleive that the Theotokos remained a perpetual Virgin.

The Greek word translated “brothers” is equally translated near kinsman, or cousin.

From what i understand they were planning to be married but they were not yet. Mary was a perputaul vigin the so called brothers such as james were actually cousins of another mary the wife of cleophas. had a debate with some people who thought they were the blessed mothers chidlren and i said no becuase mary is and was always a virgin. besides tradition says mary was 14 when jesus was born saint joseph was 90 years old

The “until” part, by the way, is a colloquialism. Joseph and Mary never had conjugal relations, before or after Christ’s birth, according to Sacred Tradition, for Mary held her vow of perpetual virginity (that is why she asked the angel Gabriel how she could have a child while still under this vow, at the Annunciation, and while being betrothed to Joseph).

At the foot of the Cross, This is supported in Scripture as Christ bequeathed his mother to the Apostle John’s care, which is done by the firstborn. Were there were other children of Mary to accept care of her, Christ’s actions to hand her to John’s care would have been grievously insulting in Jewish culture.

Espoused means both married, given in marriage or bethrothed to be married. I’d say they were married. In fact, only Joseph was required to register at the census; Mary did not need to be there as the male head of family could register for all of them. But she went with him so as not to give birth while he was away. That tells me they were married by then – afterall, from the annunciation to the birth they certainly had about 9 months to marry as Joseph was convinced to take her as his wife. I would see no reason to delay the marriage after that. It certainly would have placed Mary in a position, carrying the Messiah, yet still unmarried if they delayed. I would say that the angel coming to Joseph to convince him was a matter of necessity so that the marriage could go forward.

In fact, they were bethrothed already two years before. It was said Mary was 12 to 14 at the time of the bethrothal, when Joseph was shown to be God’s choice, but the events take place two years later so Mary may have been 16 at the time.

My point of posting the scripture was not to start a debate about whether or not Mary was a perpetual virgin, for I do believe the churches teachings on that. It was simply to show that Scripture itself affirms that they were indeed married before Jesus was born. At least as far as ceremonial marriage was concerned. Joseph “took Mary home as his wife.”

Not to mention in Mathew 1:19, Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

Why would he want to divorce someone he was not married to?

The ancient custom of betrothal was nothing at all like today’s engagements. Today, engagement means a promise of a future marriage, but no contract has yet been undertaken. An engaged couple have no legal standing at all as husband and wife. Betrothal meant that a couple had completed the legal portion of the marriage. The second part of the marriage, the completion of the betrothal, involved the man going out and making a home for himself and his wife. Once that was established, he would go and claim his wife from her family and take her into his home.
Mary and Joseph had completed the first part of the marriage-- they were betrothed, but not yet living together. Legally, they were married.

Since the Holy Spirit knocked her up without being married, does that mean that our Blessed Mother and the Holy Spirit were guilty of adultery?

First off Mary and Joseph were not married when the Holy Spirit overshadowed her. This is why the angel came to Joseph and said :

[bibledrb]Matthew 1:20[/bibledrb]

Secondly, your implication is that Mary and the Holy Spirit had ‘sex’. There was no sex involved. Mary was and is a virgin. The Holy Spirit overshadowed her much as he overshadowed the original Ark of the Covenant.

Mary and Joseph were betrothed. A traditional Jewish marriage, assuming it was understood in the same way as it was in the Second Temple Period, consists of two separate acts. The first is engagement, more serious and binding than the secular understanding, because the couple is in fact legally married, although they don’t have relations or live together until the second act. Therefore, Mary would be a virgin at the time of the Annunciation, and Joseph would need a divorce to call off the marriage.
In Jewish law, marriage consists of two separate acts, called erusin (or kiddushin, meaning sanctification), which is the betrothal ceremony, and nissu’in or chupah, the actual ceremony for the marriage. Erusin changes the couple’s interpersonal status, while nissu’in brings about the legal consequences of the change of status.
In Talmudic times, these two ceremonies usually took place up to a year apart; the bride lived with her parents until the actual marriage ceremony (nissuin), which would take place in a room or tent that the groom had set up for her. Since the Middle Ages the two ceremonies have taken place as a combined ceremony performed in public.

Oh, duh! I forgot there wasn’t actually any sex involved… but there must have been penetration of some kind, right? Or is there another way? Just trying to figure out how the sperm would have fertilized the egg without penetration?

No. There was no penetration. No sperm involved. The only human element was Mary. The rest was God.

No, sex outside of marriage is ‘fornication.’ There is a difference. But there was no sex, so the point is moot.

:hmmm:

OK, I really don’t understand how it’s possible to fertilize an egg without sperm. I’d best bow out of this thread though so it can stay on topic. Thanks.

OK, I was reading Matthew 5:28 and it uses the word “adultery.” I didn’t realize that passage only applied to married men (it doesn’t state that explicitly).

If you ignore the culture, than you come up with this type of statement. It has already been well explained by Leegal and Bezant that they indeed were married. The scripture you quote shows that they were married.

They proved that they were married when Jesus was born, not that they were married at the annunciation.
