Were Mary and Joseph married?

A Catholic couple has asked me if Mary and Joseph were married? If not, the wife maintains that Mary was a single parent. I must say that this thinking never dawned on me but in today’s way of thinking I want to give a helpful answer, faithful to the scriptures and the teaching of the Church.
