God sent prophets in order to let his people know what he wanted of them until the time of the Messiah would come. St. Paul wrote that “in the fullness of time Christ was born of a woman…” So, God had in mind when he would send Jesus into the world long before the world was even created. In order to understand this idea you have to keep in mind that God lives in the eternal now–that for him there is no passage of time. Humans live within time, though, which is why some things happen before or after other things.
And we know Jesus is the final prophet of God because he is the Word of God, and once God himself has spoken in the person of his Son, who else could possibly add to that? And before you ask, no, the Church has not added to the Word of God, but rather plumbed the depths of his words, life, the meaning of his sacrifice down through the centuries, a process called the development of doctrine.
