Were women ever deacons?

I remember reading that the word for the original female leaders in the Christian church was ‘deacon’ but later changed to ‘servant’. I asked the wife of a deacon candidate if women were allowed to be deacons and she reacted as if shocked and remarked that a woman would never be able to be a deacon. I was just wondering why women would not be welcome to pursue this avenue.
