What is a western orthodox church? Is it in full communion with our Roman Catholic church?

What do you mean by Western Orthodox Church? Can you provide a link to it?

I would hazard a guess though and say no it is not in communion with Roman. Now it may be in communion with the Orthodox Churches, as there are many western rite churches within orthodoxy, but, again my guess, without knowing what you are talking about, would be that they are a vagante (or non-canonical) orthodox church.

Yes, the Western Orthodox Church is also known as the Latin Rite Catholic Church.

Yes? If it is the church I think you are talking about then the answer is no, No they are not in communion with Rome.

Okay, how about just the Catholic Church, in particular those of the Latin Rite. Latin Rite Catholics do no mean Catholics who go to Latin Only Mass. Those would be Tridentine Only Latin Rite Catholics.

Fr Ambrose:
A useful site to take a look at. If the group you are referring to is listed on this site, then give them a wide berth.

Religious Groups That Use ‘Orthodox’ in Their Names But Are Not Canonical Eastern Orthodox Churches
  • Links to churches that use the title “Orthodox”, many of which claim to be part of The True Church, but are not in communion with the world’s 15 autocephalous and 5 autonomous canonical Orthodox churches.

Forgive me if the irony of my position was not apparent. I was using satire in postulating the the Catholic Church is the Western Orthodox Church, as it is Orthodox in it theology, and Western in its inception (being seated at Rome versus Constantinople)

There is the Western Rite Orthodox Church that is canonically Orthodox. It is under the jurisdiction of the Antiochian Orthodox Church in the US. There are several Parishes out West. In general there are very few of them. Ther liturgy is a revised high Anglican rite. Bishop Tikhon (sp?) was the the one who revised it to make it fit Orthodox theology.

I was looking for a church close to where I work so I could go to mass during the week and came across one about two blocks from my office in Pflugerville. It is called St Augustines Western Orthodox Church. It is very small and no one was there but I saw a sign that they would have the blessing of the animals on Wed.
I don’t think they have a link, they are so small. I have just never heard of Western Orthodox and was wondering if it is in communion with our Roman Catholic church.
Thanks,

I think this link antiochian.org/Western-Rite/ explains it all in a nutshell. Though they are few at this time, it seems though the Orthodox have their own Uniates in the West. Whats fair is fair I guess, since the Catholic Church has well established Eastern Rites.

Here is a link to one of their parishes westernorthodox.com/stmark/ .

We use to have a priest that was at our parish in Austin, Fr Don Sawyer. He was eastern orthodox (I believe). I use to love his masses because they reminded me of the old latin mass. Is byzantine catholic the same?
God bless,

In addition to the Antiochian Orthodox, the Russian Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) has a few hundred parishes throughout the world. They began sending missionaries to North America late in the 19th century, but found their true mission by helping to keep the Russian Orthodox Church alive during the reign of the Communists and the Soviet Union. Since the Soviet Union was dissolved, ROCOR and ROC have been taking steps to reconcile.

To my knowledge, Western Orthodox usually refers to either an Antiochian or Russian Orthodox Parish, which would not be in Communion with Rome.

As a Latin Rite Catholic, I look at my church as being the true Western Orthodox Church, which had the means, desire and courage to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

ROCOR (aka “White Russian Orthodox”) always viewed ROC (aka “Red Russian Orthodox”) as being collaborationist with the Communists (not without reason). This has hampered reconciliation; however, in May of 2007 an Act of Canonical Communion was signed, ending the division and formally placing ROCAR under the authority of the Moscow Patriarchate.

People have basically said this already, but, generally speaking, “Western Orthodox” refers to churches who are part of the Eastern Orthodox communion, yet celebrate a western liturgy (such as a slightly modified version of the Tridentine Mass) and have some western disciplines and practices. It is my understanding that these churches are fairly uncommon, though perhaps that is changing as Orthodoxy grows in the West.

Thank you for the clarification.
