We do not like unanswered questions. When we do not know the answer, we have to either trust God, or try to figure it out. We take or no take actions according to what we thought.

I’m not saying that we should not think so I don’t understand if it is wrong to reason out.

Any feedback?

Reason is definitely not evil. To condemn reason is to condemn something that God gave us. Various Protestants helped perpetuate the idea that reason is … at least kind of evil (Martin Luther, for example, said that “Reason is the devil’s whore”), and unfortunately some Catholics have assimilated that way of thinking here and there.

But, please, reason at will! If you don’t use your reason, then you aren’t human … and consequently, you’re not Catholic either. So … think! Think and let no one stop you! If you have difficulties with the faith, the best way to deal with it is to lay them out there … especially to other Catholics. So speak your mind, friend. The only other thing I’ll say is that you constantly pray for humility. Humility is foundation of all virtue … including intellectual virtues … including wisdom.

God gave you a brain so use it in the best way you can.

There is nothing wrong with reasoning, however with spiritual matters there are often no answers to questions or ways to reason them out, that is also a part of being a human being (while alive anyway) and this is where Faith comes in.

Yes, I am reffering to situations people trying to figure out or locate an answer that only God seems to have, or only known to Him.

In 1998, Pope John Paul II issued the encyclical “Fides et Ratio” (“Faith and Reason”).

The First Vatican Council stated that Man can come to a belief in a “God” using reason alone.

Remember the challenge Pope Benedict issued during his Regensburg address…and the response.

Reasoning is one of our many gifts from God. It results from trying to find answers to questions, especially those pertaining to the Truth. We apply our cognitive facilities that are like items stored in the cupboard, waiting to be used as ingredients for whatever it is we want to cook. However, those ingredients must be fresh and untainted. We acquire ingredients through life experience, but the best, most pure are gotten through proper formation with regard to the morals and teachings of the Catholic Church. Without proper formation, our resultant conclusions arrived at through our own limited reasoning can be faulty.

Remember too that True Faith is a gift. Although we may enjoy pondering the Dogmas of our Religion, ultimately Faith lives separately from our human limitations with regard to reason, although Faith can be arrived at thru reason.

God bless a thinking man!**

What do you do with the things that you do not understand? Maybe you’ll do research, talk to a lot of people about it and get their opiinion, etc. I might add that most of them would probably have a different opinion, so that would add to your confussion. (When we feel confused, let that be a warning signal that you might handling something the wrong way.) Then, when you got something all figured out, you would begin to take action whether it is right or wrong… That’s the cycle.

Reasoning is not wrong for the most part but it’s often tainted by an individuals own limited knowledge or lack of, one’s own prejudices, frailties, and distance from the Holy Spirit. Ahh…if only the spiritually ignorant had knowledge and the intelligent had a conscience! Some of the most intelligent people in the world have no conscience and no integrity. Sin has a lot to do with tainted reasoning, just talk to a person who is pro-choice about abortion issues for example. Man may have be given reasoning but a man who has acquired discernment (able to distinguish between right and wrong) has a closer relationship with God. We live in a world with Angels and demons. Who truly guides our thoughts? Only our faith and fidelity to sacraments of the Church will keep us on the right path. What good is a man with reasoning if he is not a man of virtue? May the Holy Spirit keep us and bless us all !
