Recently I have stumbled upon a passage in the bible that has caught my attention. It’s in regards to foods that are clean to eat and unclean. Leviticus 11:7-8 in particular where it clearly states “And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.” There is also another paragraph that clearly states one can not eat shellfish as that is “unclean” and you are to detest it. It lists other animals one is to detest and not eat as well like owls, bats, hawks, etc…(like who would want to eat them anyway) but I was wondering what the official Catholic teaching is on this as I have never heard of any teaching before. Not to mention, I have eaten ham sandwiches and pork chops along with Lobster, and shrimp hundreds of times! I read the entire passage of Leviticus 11 and frankly, this one has me stumped. In my 32 years of being a Catholic, not once have I been told by a religious education teacher or priest that certain foods are to be detested.
